Restoration alert! Following previous updates from our workshop:

As well as working on the new build GALATEA, Jordan has been restoring the 26-foot OPHELIA, a project we've taken on to be completed in 2024. She's a beautiful Kim Holman sloop; it's an absolute pleasure to have her lines to admire in the workshop.

Happy Friday folks!

FYI best to email Ben directly, through the website, when getting in touch.

Working on the new-build GALATEA, we've got the wonderful skills of Pete, who's back from Tasmania having taken a year to work as a boatbuilder and travel over there, and there's Jordan, who recently graduated from Falmouth Marine School, taking on some intricate work in these photos.

GALATEA is a 23-foot Ed Burnett new build currently underway at the workshop in Gweek and is due to be launched this spring.

Introducing.... GALATEA! In the latter part of 2023, we were busy building another 23-foot Ed Burnett design ( #110); she's the same as PANACEA, the first boat Ben built to this design, but planked with yellow cedar and featuring a lifting bowsprit and rigging set up for real ease of handling – we're looking forward to finishing her for launch this spring.

We're delighted to have been awarded the winner of the 'New Sailing Vessel of the Year' category at the Classic Boat awards last week. This is for our new-build CONSTANCE, seen here, sailing in Falmouth bay.

Credit to traditional builders working at Ben Harris Boatsat the time: Pete Paxton, Josh Neely, James Pardoe and Ventura Lago. Also to naval architect Jack Gifford. To John Albrect for CONSTANCE's rigging, Andrew Cox Marine and Kyle Furlong for the marine engineering.

The lines for CONSTANCE, a 34-foot gaff cutter, were developed by Ben in collaboration with Jack Gifford and inspired by a Falmouth Quay Punt called CURLEW.

Thanks to all that joined us in the workshop down at Gweek last Friday night to fit the shutter plank. It was suitably cold to bless the new boat with her first dram of whisky and to warm ourselves up. Also lovely to have Isaac Ockenden and other friends playing. Thank you for those joyous sounds!

Ben's new boat is a sistership to PANACEA, an Ed Burnett 23-foot gaff cutter design.

Please pop in and see the progress on her build...

Just months after CONSTANCE's launch, Ben and the team have laid the keel for a sistership to PANACEA, an Ed Burnett-designed 23ft gaff cutter yacht.... Time is flying; here's Ben, Josh and Jordan steaming and bending the green oak frames to the temporary stringers for a new customer. More photos and videos in due course.

Here she is! After all those hours of hard work, CONSTANCE has been launched and has graced the waters surrounding Falmouth. Here's a video for you guys – we hope you enjoy it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tlb2P5OC20w

Watch the well-attended launch in this video which is narrated by Simon Wisker, who commissioned this newly-built wooden boat.

In this video, Simon lays out the design of CONSTANCE, which he developed with Ben Harris and naval architect Jack Gifford. He discusses the features of the Falmouth quay punt CURLEW and deep-drafted working boats, which allow for a voluminous interior and sea-kindly characteristics.

Simon also explains getting involved and hands-on in building CONSTANCE and what it was like working alongside Ben Harris and his team.

Watch as CONSTANCE glides through the waters off Pendennis Point and the Carrick Roads in Falmouth, Cornwall.

With thanks to traditional boatbuilders Pete Paxton, Josh Neely, James Pardoe and Ventura Lago who worked alongside Ben at the workshop within Gweek Quay Boatyard. Thank you to naval architect Jack Gifford, and Andrew Cox Marine - responsible for marine engineering and electronics. Also, thanks to John Albrecht for CONSTANCE's traditional rigging.

Ben Harris & Co Wooden Boats use traditional boatbuilding techniques to build (new) sailing yachts and traditional boats, restore motor and sailing vessels, including smaller craft – dinghies and yacht tenders – as well as making masts and spars in their workshops.

Watch the latest video update from Ben Harris & Co...
CONSTANCE, ALVA and PANACEA (all traditionally built by Ben) are side-by-side in the workshop. See hefty lumps of oak being shaped up – a job that Ben really enjoys. There's some spar making in there and, of course, progress being made on Ben's latest gaff-cutter new-build CONSTANCE which is nearing completion. Spot the visitor the guys have been entertaining over the last few months during winter.

Ben's also on TV tonight, 8pm on Channel 5!
