⚡ Finding the fault without causing another problem.

Two recent call-outs involved very different properties but a similar issue — circuits that kept tripping.

At a holiday let, it was a troublesome socket circuit, while at a traditional stone cottage, a lighting circuit was tripping when the kitchen lights were switched on.

Rather than guessing or unnecessarily opening up walls and floors, methodical electrical testing allowed both faults to be narrowed down, identified and located.

The right solutions could then be put in place with minimal disruption or damage to the properties.

Sometimes faults are found and resolved in minutes, on occasions the circuit will need to be broken down logically and testing carried out on individual sections of the circuit

Fault finding is as much about understanding the results and working through the possibilities as it is about carrying out the repair — particularly in older properties where you don’t always know what’s hidden behind the walls.

Out with the old, in with the new⚡

I recently replaced two older double-pole Type AC RCDs that were no longer providing the level of protection needed for a modern home.

Type AC RCDs are designed to detect alternating residual currents, but modern electronic equipment can produce pulsating DC residual currents, which can affect the operation of a Type AC device.

The new Type A RCDs provide protection against both AC and pulsating DC residual currents, making them much better suited to today’s connected appliances and equipment.

During testing, the existing RCDs also failed to meet the required disconnection times — another reason they needed replacing.

A good reminder that electrical safety isn’t just about what you can see. Proper testing can uncover protection that isn’t performing as it should.

⚡️ Some electrical faults aren’t obvious until you know where to look.

Some recent inspections turned up a couple of faults that could easily have gone unnoticed without thorough electrical inspection and testing.

🐀 A main meter tail had been chewed through by a rat, leaving damage to the cable that wouldn’t necessarily be spotted during a quick visual check.

🌊 Then a less ordinary job on a fishing boat, a battery busbar was found full of salty water — creating a serious risk of corrosion, overheating and electrical failure.

🔥 Loose connections arc, causing excessive overheating and melting the insulating materials around the electrical conductive parts.

This is why electrical testing isn’t just about ticking a box. Proper inspection and testing can uncover problems hidden behind covers, connections and equipment before they develop into something much more serious.

From rodents and moisture to loose connections, corrosion and damaged cables, sometimes the most important faults are the ones you can’t see.

If it’s been a while since your electrics were properly inspected, it’s worth knowing what’s going on behind the scenes.

Another project finished up with the second fix, testing and certification completed on this garden room and workshop extension. ⚡️

The project also included a newly built pergola and Jacuzzi area, so the existing electrical installation needed updating to safely accommodate the new outdoor space.

The consumer unit was replaced, upgrading the protection for the garage, garden room and workshop, as well as providing the correct protection for the new Jacuzzi installation.

With the testing completed and an Electrical Installation Certificate (EIC) issued, everything is ready for the customer to enjoy.

Even with summer coming to an end, a covered outdoor space with the right power and lighting can still be a great place to spend time well into the cooler months.

💡 The right lighting can completely transform a room.

Today’s job was a great example of why choosing the right fittings and positioning them properly makes such a difference.

In the kitchen, I fitted quality Ansell downlights with high lumen output and excellent CRI, giving bright, natural-looking light where it’s needed. Paired with an Enkin dimmer, the lighting can be smoothly adjusted from 0–100% — bright and practical when cooking, softer when relaxing.

In the lounge, I installed an Ansell C-Cell LED strip, discreetly hidden behind an exposed ceiling beam. The fitting disappears from view while creating an even wash of light across a previously darker area around the log burner.

When choosing lighting, things like lumen output, CRI, beam angle, colour temperature, positioning and dimming compatibility all make a difference. It’s not simply about how many lights you have — it’s about getting the right light in the right place.

Good lighting shouldn’t just illuminate a room. It should enhance the space.

🔌⚡️ Some useful upgrades for this customer.

This one involved installing a 7kW EV charger at the bottom of the garden, giving the customer a convenient dedicated charging point right where they need it.

I also fitted a new outdoor socket at the patio, perfect for garden maintenance, or powering up whatever electrical kit you have in the garden.

A couple of practical upgrades that make everyday life a little easier — and, importantly, all installed properly and built to last.

🏖️ Holiday ready means more than making the beds and checking the hot tub.

I’ve recently completed an EICR on holiday caravans in Cornwall to make sure the electrical installations are safe and in good working order for the people staying there.

Holiday caravans can see much higher use than a typical home, with different guests coming and going throughout the year. And unlike at home, holidaymakers aren’t going to notice gradual deterioration or carry out regular checks themselves.
