Boilers, are usually running quietly in the background, forgotten until they're not!

Usually a very standard tweak during a regular maintenance check can fix it but when it goes wrong the cost can be astronomical and the wait even more painful without hot water or heating for several days. Contrary to popular belief keeping your thermostat on constantly on a minimum setting will be costly as your boiler will regularly be firing up to maintain the temperature in your home and when you are sleeping or out this is not efficient at all.

The truth is that having the heating on only when you need it is the best way to save energy – why would you heat an empty house? Setting a timer or using the program function on your thermostat means it'll turn the heating on and off for you, so you can set up a schedule that works around your day.

The latest technology has a digital valve on each radiator that monitors the temperature in that individual room but if you still have the old valves fitted then it is worth turning the ones in rooms you don't use off to correctly distribute the heat in the areas you actually need it in.
