This poor little Loco arrived from a courier in a very crushed-up condition. So, there was nothing for it but to find some more engine cladding. Also, the whistle was bent over in the boiler causing a small steam leak. By entering the boiler through the sight glass hole with a small butane burner torch and then heating up the insert-solder, surprisingly the problem was solved. With further steam testing proving that all was well the black cladding was assembled.

Basically a nightmare melted sight glass repair involving soldering bolts inside the boiler (!), super glue, and a plastic bag now permanently in place behind the sight glass - yes, I said a plastic bag. Its a long story and if I told it, my reputatioin, such as it is, would be detroyed. Send money and I'll tell you!. Ha-ha. But hey, the engine runs again. Happy customer.

What a lovely colour. MSS don't make them anymore with this colour except by special bulk order. We had to get this one going after a repair and here we are testing using compressed air as we don't like to tarnish an engine if at all possible during the bench work. Ideally it should leave us in the same cosmetic condition as it came in. And sometimes it does!

What we have learned over the years (yes we have done repairs on these locos a few years back) is that there is a gulf between the bench testing with air and sitting it on a track under live steam. Both need there own testing - preferably.

True, it's not MSS but Mamod made one almost identical. We did some repair work on this one as the customer melted the sight glass by running it with insufficient water in the boiler. Here it is during the final test run.
