We often judge buildings by how well they keep the weather out.
Perhaps it's time we started judging them by the environment they create inside.

For generations we've measured a good building by its walls, roof, insulation and energy efficiency.
Those things matter.
But modern homes are changing.
As they become warmer and more airtight, they're also creating increasingly complex indoor environments—environments shaped by ventilation, humidity, moisture, occupancy and the choices we make every day.

The future of healthy housing won't be defined solely by lower energy bills.
It will be defined by how well our buildings support the health of the people living inside them.

Mould is rarely the beginning of the story. It's usually the end of one.
Awaab's Law is an important step forward because it demands action when homes become unsafe. But if we only remove the mould, have we really solved the problem?
Every day, homes are asked to cope with cooking, showering, drying clothes and simply being lived in. When ventilation, heating and building performance fall out of balance, mould is often just the visible warning sign.
The real opportunity isn't just faster mould removal. It's better diagnosis.
If we want healthier homes, we need to understand why buildings stop managing moisture in the first place.

Elements began with a simple goal: understand why buildings become unhealthy, not just how to hide the symptoms.

The lump of coal that moved a wall.

One of the joys of forensic building investigation is that buildings still manage to surprise you.

Two unrelated surveys.
Two unrelated properties.
Exactly the same failure mechanism.

A single piece of reactive clinker aggregate hidden inside a concrete block had expanded enough to fracture the surrounding masonry.

In one property it blew plaster from the wall.
In another it physically lifted a course of blockwork.
The chemistry behind this behaviour is well understood.

The question is whether we've been overlooking it inside ordinary domestic clinker walls for decades.

Sometimes the most interesting discoveries don't begin with answers.
They begin with awkward questions.

Meet Aaron West, founder of Elements and creator of the Damp Engineering™ methodology.

Aaron specialises in building pathology, environmental performance, heritage buildings and complex moisture related defects.

Most of us can tell you whether it's going to rain tomorrow.

Far fewer can tell you about the humidity in their bedroom, the carbon dioxide levels in their home, or whether the air they're breathing is getting healthier or less healthy over time.

Yet we spend around 90% of our lives indoors.

Every home has its own climate.
