Some transformations are hard to believe until you see them side by side.
This garden once had a tired, leaf-strewn pool cover doing very little for anyone. We replaced it with a natural swimming pool and Brimstone Ash-clad pavilion, where the planting is allowed to run right up to the water and the architecture steps back to let the landscape lead.
The pavilion's full-height glazing opens the interior straight onto the pool, so the boundary between built and grown almost disappears. And even on the hottest day the pavilion provides cool and shade. Take a look through the gallery - after, then the pool in use, then where the project began.

This gorgeous poolside pavilion went through the pre planning application process.
In our latest journal post, we explain why we believe early, collaborative engagement with the Local Planning Authority and the local community gives clients a far stronger, less risky path to approval than going straight to planning and hoping an appeal will sort things out if refused. It's an approach that's helped us achieve a 100% planning success rate with South Oxfordshire District Council over the last 15 years.

Let's get outdoors! 🌿☀️
When we design a home or extension, we always think about the garden as much as the building itself. Big sliding glass doors, generous windows, and a clever layout mean the inside and outside start to feel like one continuous space.
Whether it's a family dinner on the terrace, morning coffee watching the birds, or an evening barbecue with friends, we want every home we design to make the most of its outdoor space, right from day one, even while the garden is still finding its feet!

Today we're celebrating Simon Mack, the architect behind Simon Mack Architecture right here in the heart of Henley-on-Thames. For 15 years, Simon has helped local homeowners and clients navigate the planning process with SODC, turning tricky sites and big ideas into beautiful, sustainable homes.
When he's not at the drawing board (or on a building site in a hi-vis vest!), you'll likely find Simon behind a camera, always learning something new, and generously sharing his knowledge by mentoring others in the profession.

A beautiful staircase connect floors and sets the tone for the entire home.
At Simon Mack Architecture, we design staircases that are as individual as our clients: from sleek glass-and-timber flights that flood a hallway with light, to sweeping traditional stairwells with bespoke joinery.
