Eli joins us as a Contract Manager, based in Bridgend, bringing with him valuable project management experience within the Facilities Management industry.

Having recently achieved his NVQ Level 6, Eli is looking forward to continuing his professional development, working alongside the team and expanding his knowledge and experience as he takes on new challenges.

🏥 Sandwell Hospital Generator Roof Refurbishment
📍 Lyndon site, West Bromwich | 🏢 Healthcare | 🔧 Liquid overlay system

Central Group delivered small works refurbishment to the generator roof at Sandwell Hospital’s Lyndon site, helping improve waterproofing performance and extend the service life of the existing asphalt roof system.

As the works were carried out within an operational hospital environment, careful planning and safe working practices were essential to minimise disruption while maintaining control throughout the installation.

Our works included:
🔹 Cleaning and preparing the existing asphalt roof
🔹 Upgrading key roof details
🔹 Installing additional waterproofing layers
🔹 Applying a Flexitec liquid overlay system
🔹 Incorporating a carrier membrane to create seamless protection

The completed liquid overlay provided a durable, seamless waterproof finish, improving protection to the generator roof and supporting the long-term performance of the existing system.

⚠️ Some roof decks look stable. Until they’re put under load.

Fragile roof decks are a hidden risk we come across during repair and re-roofing. Especially found in schools, hospitals, housing and public buildings, they’re a serious challenge because they can cause structural collapse or contain asbestos.

Materials including woodwool slabs, stramit boards and RAAC panels all appear serviceable on the surface, but may not support workers, materials or temporary loads. Presuming a roof’s safe because it appears solid can be a dangerous assumption.

At Central, our approach is to understand and accurately assess the roof, then apply HSE's guidance on control. Before carrying out work, we undertake detailed surveys and intrusive investigations of the roof properties, identify fragile construction, and plan the safest method to carry out the project.

Depending on the structure, this may include:
- temporary working platforms or crash decks
- controlled access routes and exclusion zones
- phased strip and replacement
- load management
- modern replacement deck systems designed to current standards

Central undertake 2,000 specialist surveys a year. We are highly experienced in roof inspections and can identify structures susceptible to deterioration, advising clients professionally on managing risks to the building and users.

Every successful refurbishment starts with understanding what’s there. If there are signs of structural instability, make the correct decision to mitigate risk.

🏙️ Roof refurbishment in a busy city-centre residential environment comes with more than one challenge.

🏗️ Swan Court, Marion Court & Stansted House Roof Refurbishment
📍 Westgate Estate, Gloucester

Central Group delivered a large-scale flat roof refurbishment across three occupied residential buildings on Gloucester’s Westgate Estate, located beside Gloucester Cathedral.

The project involved upgrading multiple roof areas to improve waterproofing, drainage and thermal efficiency, while carefully managing works around residents, restricted access and the surrounding city-centre environment.

The existing roofs presented several challenges, including ageing waterproofing systems, deteriorated roof details and a mix of substrates such as woodwool slab, screed-to-falls construction and plywood deck areas.

Our works included:
🔹 A new warm roof build-up using the MOY Roof Waterproofing System Specialists Paralon reinforced bitumen membrane system
🔹 Metrotile UK Ltd Work
🔹 Tapered PIR insulation to improve falls and drainage
🔹 New outlets, flashings, trims, raised kerbs and adapted parapet details
🔹 Specialist waterproofing around tank rooms

The completed refurbishment delivered:

🍃🚮 Making a difference in the communities around us.

Over the past few weeks, teams from across Central Group have been giving their time to support local community initiatives in Hereford and Cardiff.

Members of our Hereford branch recently helped tidy up the old Garden of Rest at Holmer Parish Church, giving up their time before heading to our Summer Event at Oaker Wood Leisure.

Meanwhile, more than 20 people from our Bridgend branch travelled to Cardiff for a litter pick, where the team collected over 25 bags of litter. It was also great to be joined by team members from Wates Group, working together to make a positive difference in the local area.

🏆 Three Central Group projects shortlisted at the 2026 Pitched Roofing Awards

We’re proud to share that three of our projects have been shortlisted at this year’s Pitched Roofing Awards, recognising the quality, technical capability and breadth of roofing expertise delivered by our teams across the UK.

The shortlisted projects are:

🔹 Welsh Water, Cleppa Park, Newport
Best Use of a Profiled Metal Roof

A 2,500m² roof refurbishment delivered across a live site, involving a complex over-clad installation, rooflight replacement, gutter replacement and PV panel reinstatement. The completed roof improved weatherproofing, thermal performance and long-term durability.

🔹 Spitfire Hangar, Filton Airfield
Best Use of a Heritage Roof

A Grade II listed aircraft hangar with strong links to Britain’s aviation heritage, transformed into the Spitfire Hangar as part of the wider Brabazon New Town regeneration. The project required a sensitive refurbishment approach, balancing modern roof performance with the preservation of the building’s historic character.

🔹 Conway Primary School, Birmingham
Best Use of Concrete or Clay Tiles for a Commercial Project

A technically complex refurbishment across a live primary school environment, featuring pitched roofs, valleys, dormers, flat roof interfaces and a central tower. The project combined traditional Marley Acme clay tiles with advanced liquid waterproofing to improve weather resistance, drainage and long-term performance.

To have three very different projects shortlisted is a strong reflection of the experience within our teams, from profiled metal roofing and heritage refurbishment through to complex pitched roofing works in occupied education environments.

🏚️ Restoring a Grade II Listed Aircraft Hangar

⭐️ Pitched Roofing Awards 2026 Nominee

🏗️ Spitfire Hangar Roof, Filton Airfield

📍 Bristol | 👥 Client: YTL Construction UK | 🏛️

Hangar 16U at Filton Airfield has strong links to Britain’s aviation heritage, including its association with the development of the Spitfire.

Once derelict and structurally compromised, the building has now been transformed into the Spitfire Hangar, a modern commercial and heritage destination within Brabazon New Town.

Central delivered the roof refurbishment, balancing modern performance requirements with preservation of the listed structure.

The project involved:
⚒️ Replacing the deteriorated corrugated metal roof
♨️ Upgrading insulation and waterproofing performance
💦 Installing new flashings, guttering and roof details
👨‍💻 Adapting the roof design after around 80% of rafters were found to be twisted, curved or misaligned
🦺 Maintaining strict safety controls across a large and complex roof area

The result is a durable, watertight and thermally upgraded roofing solution, backed by a 25-year system warranty, preserving an important aviation landmark for its next chapter.
