Every successful project starts with strategy.

It's tempting to jump straight into design, but the strongest projects begin long before the first drawing is produced.

Stage 0: Strategy is about asking the right questions. Understanding your ambitions, budget, site constraints and long-term goals allows us to shape a clear strategy before investing significant time and money.

Sometimes that means moving forward with confidence. Sometimes it means discovering that a project isn't quite right - and that's just valuable.

The new Scouts' Corner on Eign Road is a project we're incredibly proud to have delivered for our local community.

Scouts' Corner has served Herefordshire since 1949, but as the organisation grew, it needed a new home fit for the future.

It was a pleasure to work alongside William Powell & Sons to bring the vision to life, creating a flexible, energy-efficient community hub that will support local Scouts and young people for generations to come.

Work Stage 2 is all about exploration.

These concept drawings are from a project we've recently secured planning permission for and are now developing into our Work Stage 4 technical package.

The early design stage is all about exploring ideas. We test different layouts, forms and materials and redefine the concept until it is right.

For this project, one of the defining features of the original concept was a flat sedum roof, designed to help the extension sit quietly within its setting while enhancing biodiversity.

As the design developed through discussions with the client, it became clear that a shallow pitched roof better suited both the brief and the client's needs.

Exploring multiple options is all about asking the right questions until the design truly fits the people who will live there.

We often talk about bringing the outside in and wanting to feel close to nature. This photograph from our project in Dorstone captures this perfectly.

Large bi-fold doors, like these, allow living spaces to open up completely, flooding interiors with natural light, inviting fresh air inside and making the garden feel like an extension of the home. They help keep you connected to the outdoors all year round - whether on a hot day like today, welcoming a much-needed breeze, or closed during a winters storm, framing the changing seasons from the comfort of inside.

At OHA, we aim to design spaces that feel brighter, calmer and more enjoyable to live in.

Thrilled to see this beautiful kitchen installed at our Herefordshire refurbishment project last week.

We're on site every fortnight as part of our Stage 5 service, monitoring progress as the project moves closer to completion. Outside, the original brickwork is being stripped back ready for its new render, and it's exciting to see everything starting to come together.

Heron Hill, Herefordshire

Designed to make the most of its sloping site, Heron Hill was transformed with a contemporary extension that runs perpendicular to the existing house. The carefully considered form allowed the upper floor to cantilever at either end, creating depth, interest and a striking architectural silhouette.

By rendering the existing house in white and the new extension in black, we created a clear distinction between old and new while helping to break up the overall mass of the building against its beautiful woodland backdrop.

Swipe to the end to see some of our early concept sketches. From the outset, the layout was shaped around the courtyard and swimming pool, with the bedrooms positioned on the lower levels to allow the main living spaces to make the most of the views and outdoor connections.

(And yes... we're slightly envious of that pool in this weather!)

Every building has a story to tell.

Our recent site visit was all about understanding this collection of historic buildings before beginning the design process. From original electrical equipment and forgotten furniture to the character of the stonework and outbuildings, every detail helps us build a picture of how the site has evolved over time.

Swipe to the end to see some of Mark's initial strategy sketches. Before we start designing, we spend time understanding the site as a whole, looking at its history, opportunities and constraints so we can create the strongest possible response to our client's brief.

This is where great projects begin — with careful observation, plenty of questions and a blank sheet of paper.

— The Scout Hut Construction.

This project was completed by us from start to finish and now sits at the heart of the community. Throughout the build we were onsite regularly: advising on any changes, updating drawings, keeping all the project teams coordinated, and making sure our clients always knew exactly what was happening, when, where and why. Being present during construction means that the final result is as good as it possibly can be - exactly how we designed it.

A Home Shaped by its Setting

Set within a historic Herefordshire village close to the Welsh border, Welsh Newton Common was carefully designed to sit comfortably within its landscape and surroundings.

The scale, form and material palette were all informed by the character of the local area, creating a contemporary home that feels connected to its setting rather than imposed upon it. Positioned amongst mature hedgerows and trees, the dwelling takes advantage of natural screening, framed views and solar orientation while maintaining a sensitive relationship with the wider landscape.
