Spadeoak turns 49 today!
From a small surfacing contractor in High Wycombe in 1976 to a £38m+ powerhouse delivering over 300 projects a year, what a journey we are on!

Since the 27th February 1976 we’ve paved (literally) our way to working on some of the UK’s most prestigious projects from Premier League stadiums to Wimbledon to the London 2012 Olympics, royal households and many, many more.

Our secret is our people, many of our team have been with us for over a decade, while fresh faces bring new energy to the team our existing maintain our ethos and ethics of old, keeping us the much loved company people know today. It’s this mix of expertise and innovation that keeps us at the top.

Spadeoak returned to Kidbrooke in Greenwich, to surface roadway
Surfacing specialists Spadeoak installed circa 6,200m² of asphalt including base course, binder and surface course. Utilising a lower carbon solution compared to conventional material Spadeoak was able to save our client, on material alone, over 25,800kgco2e/t road the roadway installation, the equivalent of planting over 1,000. trees.

Another quality installation to complement the works already completed on-site including our previous post on the installation of buff hand-lay.

Spadeoak complete coloured asphalt project in London.
Surfacing specialists Spadeoak was appointed by our client to complete the surfacing and hand-lay installation of coloured asphalt in Kidbrooke, London.

The 325m² area was hand laid in a 10mm buff SuperColour asphalt, following our teams laying an asphalt base course layer. SuperColour asphalt is created using a combination of high-quality binders, coloured pigments, and aggregates to achieve a vibrant, long-lasting surface course. The materials integral colouring ensures a durable and hard-wearing surface.

Estimating Excellence: Lessons from Spadeoaks Seasoned Pro
A huge thank you to Tim for developing and delivering an Estimating 101 course for our team both seasoned professionals and stars of the future.

With years of experience, Tim shared an insightful lesson, from the fundamentals of estimating to the importance of clarity and precision. The session also provided a deep dive into all estimating elements including plant and machinery that keep our projects moving, from history to some invaluable learnings from Tim’s own journey at Spadeoak.

CASE STUDY - LIDL CAR PARK SURFACING
Following our recent post from our project at LIDL Saffron Walden, please find below a link to the project case study.
Surfacing specialists Spadeoak was the appointed contractor to complete a car park surfacing project at a new LIDL store in Saffron Walden.
Spadeoak was tasked with surfacing the new 4,275m² car park, footpath and carriageway, the new store will open in February 2025 with this car park housing 123 parking bays including 10 EV charging stations.

Surfacing specialists Spadeoak was the appointed contractor to complete a car park surfacing project at a new LIDL store in Saffron Walden.
Spadeoak was tasked with surfacing the new 4,275m² car park, footpath and carriageway, the new store will open in February 2025 with this car park housing 123 parking bays including 10 EV charging stations.

To support the water management of this car park and minimise the requirement for major drainage infrastructure, Spadeoak utilised a permeable asphalt solution for effective water management with exceptional permeability and durability properties as well as sound absorption creating a quieter environment.

Working closely with our supply chain partners Spadeoak was delighted to be able to support our client with a reduced carbon offering on this build, utilising a sustainable asphalt solution delivering carbon savings on the asphalt material installed, this was over 8 tonnes of carbon saved, the equivalent of planting over 320 trees.

Surfacing specialists Spadeoak was appointed by our client to complete the surfacing installation at a new industrial estate on the south coast, surfacing the car park, access road and footpath/pavement areas.
Our works were phased around the construction of the new estate, working with our client and other contractors to minimise disruption.

Spadeoak installed base, binder and surface course to the pavement areas and binder and surface course to the car park and access roads circa 15,000m².
Spadeoak was also delighted to support our client installing a sustainable solution for this project reducing the carbon on site compared to conventional material. This created a saving of over 22 tonnes of carbon, the equivalent to planting over 880 trees.
