The UK Government is taking a pragmatic, phased approach, stepping back from outright bans on gas and oil boiler replacements. Instead, the transition to low-carbon heating is voluntary for existing homes, driven by financial incentives rather than forced removal of fossil fuel systems.
Current Policy Stance
No Forced Replacements:
There are no legal requirements forcing you to remove or replace a working gas or oil boiler.
Post-2035 Strategy:
Previous plans for an outright ban on replacing gas and oil boilers from 2035 have been scrapped. Homeowners will still be legally permitted to replace broken fossil fuel boilers with new ones past this date.
New Build Restrictions:
The government mandates low-carbon heating alternatives (such as heat pumps) for all newly built homes.
Clean Heat Market Mechanism:
A government-backed scheme applies to boiler manufacturers, incentivizing them to match sales of fossil fuel boilers with a proportion of heat pumps, though this remains an industry target rather than a penalty on consumers.
