Works are now complete at the grade A listed Tarbat Discovery Center. Although the renovation works carried out 25 years ago were to an exceptionally high standard, some TLC was required.
This building form as we see it today dates from 1756 and there's been a church on the site since way back in 1255.

The belfry stonework was carefully cleaned and all the cement pointing was removed by hand and repointed in traditional hot lime mortar, with some additional conservation works carried out to individual stones in need of attention.

Existing voids had been allowing water to soak into the belfry, causing algae growth internally. We tamped oakum into these voids, which as a tarred h**p provides an additonal waterproof seal at the back of the masonry joints. Interestingly, oakum was (and still is) also used in the building of wooden boats.

The exisiting lime render was cleaned and repaired where necessary and treated to hot mixed limewash - when we mix the lime it reaches over 250 degrees centigrade and is then applied hot! It was a real privilege to work on this much loved building and we wish the Tarbat Discovery Centre many more happy years to welcome visitors from near and far.

A finished fireplace 👌 Our talented client sketched up what they'd like... then we carved, polished and built this lovely and substantial surround. We used local Clashach sandstone which is of top quality. The rubble throat backing was enlarged, carefully cleaned and rebuilt and pointed with lime mortar to compliment the new surround. As works were almost completed, we discovered a document almost 200 years old wedged behind the doorframe... which turned out to be an old invoice! 🔥

Alterations completed! Over a ton of freshly dressed sandstone went into our project which centred around forming a new, larger window surround in keeping with the original building. This opened up the stunning views across the Cromarty Firth for our client. Other works included structural consolidation along with stone replacements and a full repoint with lime mortar to complete the works. 🌿

This home is now a bold pop of colour! Previously disfigured through numerous alterations and with the stone faces deterioating from "rock hard" cement pointing, we removed all the cement and reinstated a lime render. This will protect the walls and prevent water ingress. Each chimney was assessed individually and where necessary we consolidated the internal linings, flaunches (mortar fillets along the slates) and haunches (mortar around chimney pots). Structually compromised stones were replaced and hand dressed to match original. Also shown are some of the main stages that make up a lime render. Completing the repairs, a silicate mineral paint was applied in an eye-catching ochre as robust protection from the salts and water splashback from the pavement.

As vehicles become larger it's perhaps inevitable that openings built for a different era and methods of transport get damaged.

Here we stripped the formal opening back to sound and carved replacement finely picked and rustificated (recessed margin) stone. We rebuilt the rubble opening and feathered it into the neighbouring boundary wall.

Solid repairs to last and enhance 👍

Over the next few days we'll show you some small but satisfying repairs we've been carrying out to entrances around the district, all due to vehicle impact damage.

Starting off with a formal entrance that forms part of a listed period property:

A number of stones were dislodged and damaged beyond repair. We templated the damaged moulded stones then cut and carved replacements by ourselves off site. Finally the pillar was carefully rebuilt around the existing ironwork and is looking very elegant again. This would have been a premium entrance when new, as all the stonework has been finely honed to remove any tool marks. It is great to see this gateway restored to it's former glory.

A traditional hot mixed lime mortar repoint has completely set our latest project apart from the crowd.

Further close inspection revealed that some of the higher level masonry required intervention. This was largely due to incorrect bedding of the stone when it was originally built.

Our repair strategy was to replace the fractured and spalling sections of the chimney stack with new stone, cut and carved by ourselves, along with pigmented mortar repairs. A handsome home!

This extensive farmhouse has had a refresh and a facelift with brand new lime render. Over 400m2 of render was removed and replaced - a whopping 17 wall faces were covered.

To continue with the numbers, there were 8 chimney stacks repaired and repointed, 18 chimney pots rehaunched and over 30 tons of materials used in the project.

The pictures speak for themselves on the difference made - breathing new life into an old home to keep it in the best condition for the future.

A recent project involved restoring 136 year old chimneys at a grade A listed highland estate lodge.

Selective stone replacements were carved to exactly replicate the existing cracked and damaged stones. Fresh new pots were installed and some areas were rebuilt to maintain the chimneys' structural integrity.

The 100% repoint in a hydraulic lime mortar will keep these beautiful chimneys (with an equally impressive view) in sound repair for the future 👍

We recently re-formed a window opening into a doorway as a useful adaptation for our clients. This subtle tweak now allows more light, great access and a fuller appreciation of the garden view!

We lowered the opening and dressed new lintel, step and jamb stones to accomodate the wider opening and matched these to the original mouldings and design, all bedded with lime mortar. Built to last.

This beautiful fourth generation family farmhouse has recently benefited from our attention. These works included dismantling and rebuilding of chimney stacks which had become structurally unsound.

We dressed new cope stones to match the original and new skew stones. Defective chimney masonry, pots and internal liners were replaced with new.

All skews were cleaned, packed and pinned out with new mortar fillets applied and repointed along with the battered plinth course.

Works were facilitated via use of cherry picker and comprehensive system scaffold - our thanks to A9 Access for scaffolding installation.

We are delighted to have worked on this charming home in Tain. Full removal of cement pointing was undertaken, which had been previously carried out in ribbon and recessed styles which are well known to be especially detrimental to sandstone as they accelerate decay. This was replaced with lime mortar which compliments the stone beautifully. 😊

New mortar fillets were applied to the roof pitches and pigmented mortar repairs and selective stone replacements to defective stones were also carried out to ensure this house will be enjoyed by family for many years to come. 🏡
