It's a thing of beauty 😍

This gorgeous York stone barn roof was carefully stripped back recently, with great attention paid to preserving its character and materials. Each sound stone slate was salvaged and set aside for reuse, ensuring the integrity and appearance of the building could be maintained.

What did we do?

The existing roof was fully stripped, with all old slates removed and responsibly skipped due to significant delamination and porosity that made them no longer fit for purpose. This allowed the structure to be properly prepared for a complete renewal.

The roof was then upgraded to meet current building regulations, with full insulation installed to improve thermal performance and energy efficiency. A high-quality Roofshield breathable membrane was fitted, providing effective protection against the elements while allowing the roof to ventilate naturally.

All new battens were installed to create a strong, even fixing base, and the roof was re-slated using entirely new slates, giving a clean, durable, and long-lasting finish. Around the chimneys, new lead flashings were carefully fitted to ensure a watertight seal, and the chimney stacks themselves were re-pointed to restore their stability and appearance.

The completed roof delivers a modern, regulation-compliant system while maintaining a traditional look, built for longevity and reliable performance.

It's more than just a roof to us...

This original York stone barn roof was carefully stripped back, with great attention paid to preserving its character and materials. Each sound stone slate was salvaged and set aside for reuse, ensuring the integrity and appearance of the building could be maintained. With the roof fully opened, the structure was completely re-timbered using all new timbers, providing a reliable framework for the future.

Once the new timber structure was in place, the roof was re-slated using the original York stone slates. These were traditionally laid and securely fastened with aluminium slating pegs, combining time-honoured methods with durable modern materials. Where any slates were found to be damaged or beyond reuse, carefully selected matching stone was supplied to seamlessly blend with the original covering. The result is a restored barn roof that retains its historic character while benefiting from renewed strength and longevity.
