For traditional solid stone or cob cottages in North Devon—like this one in Newton Tracey—using a lime mortar scratch coat isn’t just a cosmetic choice; it’s essential for protecting the structural integrity of the wall. Historic Devon buildings were built to “breathe,” allowing moisture to absorb and evaporate naturally.
Applying modern cement render onto a cob or stone substrate traps moisture inside the wall, leading to damp patches, spalling stonework, and blown render.

Well we couldn’t have planned this job better having been blessed with the glorious sunshine over the last few weeks.
