Is it Autumn already?! It really felt like it today in this garden where I was working. Everything is under such HUGE stress from THE intense heat and the prolonged drought. The trees are ditching their leaves in a last attempt to save themselves and it's only the 20th August! This summer has been unrelenting. I barely recognise the Devon countryside and I know it's every bit as bad across Europe - if not worse πŸ₯Ί

What if the summer of 2026 is the new normal? How do we adapt our gardens to cope with prolonged periods of drought? Think of the Mediterranean and that dry, arid climate we are used to seeing.
Gardens in the UK still need to support biodiversity, provide flowers for pollinators and food/shelter for birds and other wildlife. We need more shade, less parched, dead lawns, more trees that can cope with drought. As custodians of these precious spaces, it's our duty πŸ™
As a gardener I have mixed emotions about seeing the death of the perennial border due to the hosepipe ban, and yet, there is now the possibility of creating a more robust planting style to work with the challenges we face!
What are your thoughts on this?

What a crazy summer it's turned out to be! I've never seen so many gardens looking this parched and brown 😒 It makes me reflect on our changing climate and question whether this vision might become the new normal? As gardeners we are only temporary custodians of the land, so it's important to get a balance between beauty and functionality. We share our open spaces with so many other species that depend on our gardens for shelter, food, flowers, water and nesting sites, so it's vital we grow with that in mind πŸ’–
As hosepipe bans come into force and drought is declared across much of the UK, we are reminded how precious water is.
Can English gardens adapt to prolonged periods of rain and drought? Let's hope so πŸ™

I've been longing to do this for the past two years and it's finally happened! I'm obsessed with planting trees - they benefit the environment, benefit pollinators and birds and of course, they benefit us, by lifting our spirits, cleaning our air and giving us something to admire!
It's a wonder to behold this little Prunus Pink Perfection in all it's springtime glory! How do trees produce petals so soft, delicate and pink?!
I planted the tree with peat free compost with added John innes mixed with soil, some beneficial micorhizzal fungi and vitax q4. The ultimate boost for growing season and any potential droughts we may face this summer...
