This wall used to echo and let sound travel straight through it.

A few pieces of insulation and some plasterboard later, it feels completely different.

It’s one of those things you’ll never see once the room is finished, but you’ll notice it every single day.

Warmer. Quieter. Better.

Most people cut insulation to fit the gap.

That’s exactly why it ends up with gaps.

Insulation should be cut slightly oversized so it friction-fits tight between the studs. No gaps. No cold spots. No money disappearing through your walls every winter.

It’s a tiny detail, but details like this are what separate a quick job from a proper one.

I started fixing this wall… then realised something wasn’t right.

The plywood had been fixed with screws.

For structural sheathing, nails are generally the preferred fixing because they’re designed to cope with movement and shear loads differently.

So out came the screws. In went the nails.

It’s one of those details nobody sees once the plasterboard goes on, but details like this matter.

Would you have left the screws in? 👇

Most people think insulation is insulation.

The reality is that gaps like these can massively reduce how well it performs.

This roof had been insulated before, but poor fitting left countless routes for heat to escape.

We’re stripping it back and doing it properly.

Most people will only ever see the finished room.

What they won’t see is the ceiling hidden above it.

This one needed the roof correcting, the ceiling reforming, a plaster-in extractor, integrated LED lighting, shadow gaps and a built-in speaker before a plasterer even touched it.

The finished result will look effortless.

That’s usually the sign it was done properly.

Most people only see the finished room.

What they don’t see is everything that comes before it.

The walls that aren’t straight.
The roofs that have moved.
The details that take days to correct before a single finished surface can go on.

This renovation is nearly 200 years old.

Every stage is about bringing control back into the building while respecting what was already here.

Because the best results aren’t created at the end.

They’re created long before anyone sees them.

Follow the renovation as it unfolds.

At first glance, it looked fine…

Then the laser came out. 😳

After nearly 200 years, this roof had dropped by around 80mm. Not something you’d ever notice from the ground, but enough to cause problems when trying to renovate it properly.

Before we can build anything new, we have to undo years of movement, sagging and old repairs.

Sometimes the biggest part of a renovation is fixing the things most people never see.

This ceiling had nearly 200 years of movement in it. 😳

What looks flat to the eye was miles out once the laser came out.

Before we can board, plaster or decorate anything, we have to put right the things most people never see.

It’s slower, messier and definitely not the glamorous part of a renovation… but it’s the difference between doing it quickly and doing it properly.

Everyone was focused on the tree growing inside the wall…

But the tree wasn’t the real problem. 👀

When we opened up this 1800s stone cottage we found years of debris, trapped moisture and a wall that could no longer breathe properly.

Old properties were designed very differently to modern houses. Add decades of repairs, plaster, rubble and alterations, and problems start to appear where you least expect them.

This is exactly why we’re stripping this house back properly and rebuilding it the right way.

Follow to see what else we uncover during this renovation. 🏚️➡️🏡

Most people never realise their cavity wall is supposed to be empty…

While renovating our 1800s stone cottage, we opened this section up and couldn’t believe what we found.

Years of rubble, debris, and even a tree root growing inside the cavity 😳

No wonder these old houses can suffer from damp and cold spots.

It’s one of those hidden problems you’d never know existed until you start digging.
