💡 Sometimes, replacing a light fitting isn't quite as simple as it sounds!

Recently, I was asked to install some rather fancy new light fittings for a client.

The only problem? The existing cables were coming through the ceiling in completely the wrong places for the new lights. 🙈

Rather than leaving the client with unnecessary holes in their ceiling, I managed to rod through the ceiling void and relocate the cables to exactly where they needed to be, keeping damage to an absolute minimum.

It's the little details that make the difference between simply fitting a light and doing a job properly.

Sometimes a straightforward job turns into a bit of a puzzle, but where there's a will, there's usually a way! 💪⚡

"Something keeps tripping. What happens now?"

It's unsettling when the power keeps going off and you don't know why. The first step is easy: ring us. You'll usually get Nathan, who'll take the details and pass them to me, and often I can tell you whether it can wait or needs looking at soon.

It helps to know which switch goes off, when, and what was on at the time.

If I come out, I test rather than guess. I check things properly until I find the cause, instead of swapping parts and hoping.

How the charge works: £102 including VAT covers travel and up to an hour on site. If the fix is small, it's usually done in the same visit under that charge. If it needs longer or parts, you get a price before I carry on, not after.

Faults that come and go, the ones that only show up in wet weather or when everything's on at once, can take more than one visit to track down. I'd rather tell you that than pretend otherwise.

The photo is an outside socket from a previous job. Damp getting into outdoor sockets and lights is a common reason for tripping in wet weather.

That charge applies in Goole, Howden, Selby and the villages around them. Ring 01904 599109, Monday to Friday, 8:30 to 5.

Most people want to know one thing before they ring an electrician about a new fuse board: roughly how much is it going to be?

Fair question. So I've put a price calculator on our website.

You answer a few simple questions about your home and your current fuse board. The main one is how many switches or fuses are in use on it. You can lift the little flip-down cover to count them, but please don't take the front off.

It then shows you an estimated price, including VAT, straight away. You don't need to give your name, number or email to see it.

The price includes the new board, a separate safety switch for each circuit (so one fault doesn't knock out the power to your whole home), surge protection, a fire-suppression device, fitting, testing and the certificate.

If you'd like to go ahead, you can send it to me with a few photos. I'll check everything and confirm the price before anything is booked. If the photos show something the calculator couldn't know about, I'll tell you what and why before you commit to anything.

For homes around Goole, Howden, Selby, York and the villages in between.

Why a new fuse board can start tripping on something that was "fine before".

It's one of the most common worries after a board change, so here's what's usually going on.

An old fuse only reacts when a circuit takes far too much power. It doesn't notice smaller faults, like damp in an outside light, a worn cable or a tired old appliance.

The safety switches on a modern board do. That's their whole job, and it's why they protect people.

So a new board can reveal a fault that has been sitting there quietly for years. Nothing was broken by the upgrade. It just stopped being ignored.

That's why I test the wiring before the old board comes off. Many problems show up then, and if one does, we stop and talk about it before going any further. Much better to know on the day than to have a circuit that keeps tripping the week after.

📱 £1,000+ on a new phone? No problem.

⚡ £1,000+ on a new fuse board? Suddenly that seems expensive!

It's funny how we look at the value of things differently.

We'll happily upgrade our phones every couple of years, yet think twice about upgrading something that could serve our homes for the next 25 years.

And the irony? We're charging all that expensive technology through electrical installations that might be decades old!

Now, I'm not saying every old fuse board needs replacing. Far from it. But it's worth thinking about where we see value and where we don't.

What do you think? Are we too quick to spend money on the things we want rather than the things we need?

Got a list of little electrical jobs you keep meaning to sort? It's usually worth doing them together.

My minimum charge is £102 including VAT. That covers travel and up to an hour on site. If two or three small jobs fit into that hour, they all come under the same charge.

So a light fitting that needs swapping, a cracked socket and a switch that's been loose since you moved in could be one visit and one charge, rather than three.

We also try to book small jobs in the same area on the same day, which keeps the travel down.

To make that work:
- Tell us everything on the list when you book, not on the day.
- If something turns out to need longer, you get a price before I carry on.

For small jobs, the £102 charge covers Goole, Howden, Selby and the villages nearby: Hook, Airmyn, Rawcliffe, Snaith, Eastrington, Gilberdyke, Drax and Camblesforth. Further out, an hour's work isn't worth the drive for either of us.

Ring Nathan on 01904 599109 with your postcode and the list, and he'll tell you whether it fits in one visit.

My multi-tool died yesterday, so this morning I’m attempting emergency surgery on the coffee table while I wait for the new one to arrive. 😆

Just need to coax a couple more days out of it.

So far, I’ve successfully turned one broken tool into several smaller broken parts. Can I call that progress? Im calling it progress!

It’s not even 7am and the optimism is already dwindling. 😂
