NICEIC has found another reason to argue that the BS7671 costs the Electrician more money, which in turn costs the customer more. This change relates to RCBOs, whether unidirectional or bidirectional, following a Solar PV assessment for Galect Ltd. I believe this is plain stupid. All Ac RCBOs are directives.
I have not encountered any Pure DC RCBO, which I am not entirely sure exists. There are no real applications for it, as we currently use AC.
By definition, AC stands for Alternating Current. RCBOs can't not be unidirectional because it would not work. After all, AC current flows back and forth, which is why it is called Alternative Current. It is not just an alternative to DC current.
I change the BS7671 to prove this wrong! The person who brought up the rather silly notion had a conflict of interest, which NICEIC thinks is okay.
The lack of appreciation for engineer judgment would be their best amendment. Although the BS7671 does accommodate certain departures, the knowledge and expertise of the engineer's judgment is not one of them. This is for obvious reasons, given the industry's current juxtaposition. The industry needs both innovation and better standards. Net Zero will not be achievable if our customers drive to work more often to pay an arm and a leg to produce electricity, which they often have to buy back at a higher rate than they sell it.
