TOP TIP: If you don’t want to do it yourself don’t be fooled by cheap labour being the answer!

This year we’ve experienced numerous examples of homeowners contracting a cheaper alternative to a quality experienced business and have come out needing to either spend again to put things right or just live with a very poor finish.

ALWAYS:

✅ Seek references of similar jobs and go and check them out.

✅ Check their public liability insurance, don’t take their word for it actually ask to see it and make sure it covers the work they are actually doing. You’d be surprised how manygardeners take on decorating jobs but aren’t covered to do so! Similarly a decorator might not have suitable cover to install a kitchen.

So the wise words here are if you value your property make sure it, and you, are protected by checking your contractors insurance cover or be it at your peril.

MAKE SURE: That you understand the process, and yes Google can help here. You don’t need to become an expert or professional but a general understanding of the steps involved will help you to check the quote matches the job and it’ll protect your investment by ensuring important steps aren’t missed. Examples we’ve seen this year include:

❌ Knots in wood not sealed with knotting solution prior to painting- which will lead to the sap from the knots bleeding through / staining.

❌ Unpainted brick surfaces not having a coat of stabilising solution applied prior to painting. Without this vital step it’s likely that the first sign of extreme heat or frost will lead to the paint cracking and flaking which could cost thousands of pounds to correct.

❌ The wrong type of product used to fill / repair window frames leading to us being contracted to remove and repair correctly before painting.

💡Buy cheap does often mean pay twice, so be careful and if unsure ask a genuine expert.

I'm glad I did as their staff were friendly and offered to send someone out the same week; often getting someone to even come out is a trick in itself! On the day, Simon made sure to let me know what time he would be arriving, and I found him to be friendly and professional. He was careful not to damage the LED lights under the units and managed to sort the issue within no time at all, and was happy with the results. Cost of living crisis! Over the coming weeks we’ll share some tips, advice and special offers to help our followers make sound decisions, try some things yourself and consider an alternative approach..

Our first example is that you don’t always have to go for a full bathroom remodel, scale it back and just go for a bathroom sparkle to get some amazing results!

We’ve just completed this bathroom ‘sparkle’ project that did just that!

This job took several months from planning to completion as we worked closely with the client on a full bathroom renovation before scaling back to drastically reduce costs but still freshen up the space.

The project involved replacing the bath taps, basin taps and waste, Mira electric shower.

In addition to this we replaced the tatty old towel rail for a sleek Reina model, including altering the pipe work and fitting new valves.

We removed a large wall unit and wall light, filled and sanded the walls before painting the ceiling and walls in Zinsser Perma White Matt mould resistant paint (mixed to a colour of choice) and the skirting, architraves, cills and doors in Bedec MSP satin.

We also re-sealed the bath, basin and shower tray.

When completed the bathroom was then complimented by the addition of a battery operated wall mirror that really made a difference without the cost of wiring etc, yet another clever way to reduce the overall outlay.

Bring on the soft furnishings and ‘voila’ the outcome was elegant and stunning!
