Metrostor Innovative, robust external storage solutions which make neighbourhoods safer, cleaner and greener!

metroSTOR is a brand of Streetspace, a respected and influential player in the urban structures sector, delivering a broad scope of architectural covered space projects throughout the UK. With innovative underground and surface storage systems for multiple waste streams, metroSTOR has one of the most comprehensive range of waste and recycling storage solutions in the world. Manufactured in the UK, metroSTOR is a brand of Streetspace and its ‘safer, cleaner, greener’ design methodology, delivers product solutions that help make our neighbourhoods safer and more pleasant places to live. metroSTOR bin stores are designed to secure waste and recycling safely, preventing bin fires from spreading. They increase recycling rates with improved resident participation, reduce waste collections by creating additional storage capacity within the same footprint. Fitted into new development and as retrofit, they reduce costly fly-tipping with the side-waste and associated negative issues from vermin, litter and antisocial behaviour.

We’re looking forward to seeing you at HOMES UK

On 24–25 November, we’ll be joining representatives from across the housing sector to talk about the elements they need to make shared neighbourhoods safer, cleaner and easier to manage.

We’ll be sharing examples of what housing providers are already doing, what we’re learning from current projects, and some of the new approaches we’re developing around:

- Improving communal waste and recycling
- Reducing fly-tipping and bulky waste
- Closing ageing refuse chutes safely
- Managing growing e-bike and lithium-ion battery risk
- Creating better external spaces around homes

If you’re attending HOMES UK, come and see us at Stand R620 and tell us what’s causing the biggest headache on your estates at the moment.

What makes communal recycling schemes successful?

It's not just better infrastructure - it's understanding how residents actually use it.

Our latest webinar with Karbon Homes and behaviour change specialist Livvy Drake explored the lessons from the Byker Estate pilot, where a combination of improved waste infrastructure, resident engagement and behavioural insight helped deliver:
♻️ 334,400 litres of recycling collected in six months
♻️ 80% resident support for the scheme
♻️ 79% of surveyed residents recycling

The discussion challenged some common assumptions about recycling in flats and highlighted practical lessons for housing providers, including:
• Why convenience drives participation
• Why location matters as much as capacity
• Why positive communications outperform repeated warnings
• Why communal recycling should be treated as a managed system, not simply an infrastructure project

We've published a free webinar summary bringing together the key findings and recommendations for future communal recycling schemes.

What can the Byker Estate pilot teach us about improving recycling in flats?

Better recycling isn't just about bins and signage. The Byker Estate pilot showed how thoughtful infrastructure design and resident engagement can boost recycling rates and create cleaner, more attractive estates.

Join Mark Whittaker from Karbon Homes, Livvy Drake - Behaviour Change Specialist, and metroSTOR as they share the project's findings and practical lessons that housing providers can apply across their own communities.

Whether you work in sustainability, asset management, neighbourhood services or estate management, you'll come away with ideas you can put into practice.

Want to improve recycling rates and reduce fly-tipping on your estates?

The biggest barrier might not be resident behaviour - it could be outdated waste infrastructure.

Join our free webinar with Karbon Homes and behaviour change specialist Livvy Drake as we share insights from the Byker Estate waste infrastructure pilot and explore how better design can deliver better outcomes for residents and the environment.

In this practical 45-minute session, you'll hear what worked, what surprised the team, and the lessons other housing providers can apply to their own communities.

Massive thanks to everyone who joined our recent e-mobility webinar.

It was a thoughtful discussion on how housing providers and local authorities can respond to growing demand for e-bike and e-scooter storage and charging in ways that are practical, safe and workable in real buildings.

We’ve now published the recording and a short summary for anyone who couldn’t attend live, or who wants to revisit the discussion.

Some of the feedback from attendees described the session as “very insightful”, “informative and thought-provoking”, and “a great conversation” with “ideas to take away”, which was encouraging to hear.

E-mobility is no longer a fringe issue. For many landlords, councils and operators, it is becoming a live operational question around safety, access, infrastructure and how shared spaces are managed in practice.

You can now watch the recording and read the summary here: https://ow.ly/NiGu50Zc9uo

“We’re not responsible for what happens inside the flat.”

It’s a position many housing providers have historically taken - but lithium‑ion battery incidents don’t stop at the front door. As e‑mobility devices become more common, the sector is having to rethink what “reasonable action” really means today.

Join us on tomorrow (11:00–12:30) along with London Fire Brigade’s Nick Coombe and Pete Apps from Inside Housing as we explore rising incident patterns, what would be examined after an incident, and the practical steps landlords are starting to take.

This isn’t about alarmism, it’s about gaining clarity.

Fly-tipping on housing estates is often treated as a behaviour problem, but it is just as often a sign of infrastructure failure.

In practice, it tends to build up where recycling bins are easily contaminated, collections are missed, bins overflow, bulky waste services are absent, and bin areas are accessible to non-residents.

That is why enforcement on its own rarely fixes the problem. At Dale Court in Kingston upon Thames, rethinking the waste infrastructure helped reduce fly-tipping by 80%.

Cleaner estates are not just the result of better resident behaviour or tougher enforcement. In many cases, they depend on waste systems that are secure, usable, and designed around real conditions.

As Tenant Satisfaction Measures move into their second full cycle of reporting, they are increasingly being used as a lens on estate conditions and resident experience, not just a compliance dataset.

We’ve pulled together three things social landlords should be paying attention to as they review 2024–25 results and plan ahead for 2025–26.

Fire safety doesn’t stop at the front door. Bin stores, cycle parking and storage areas can become serious risks when they sit too close to homes.

We’re seeing more fires start outside and spread fast, made worse by poorly separated stores and the rise in e‑bike and e‑scooter batteries.

Good external works design can make a big difference:
- Sensible separation distances
- Non‑combustible, fire‑resisting construction
- Safe, ventilated charging and storage
- No compromise on escape routes

Designing this in early keeps projects compliant, insurable and safer for residents.

Infrastructure problems often show up as behaviour problems, especially on social housing sites.

Residents leaving waste outside bins, storing items in corridors or using informal charging points are often responding to environments that do not support the way estates operate today.

Understanding why behaviour occurs is often more useful than simply trying to control it.
