Matty and Olly just made the best decision of their lives…. To become Bricklayers and climb to the top of the construction tree, after all,

Without bricklayers, all the other trades would just be unemployed people standing in a field…. Your welcome!!! 🤟

These two have opted for 7am starts, Scottish winters and spending their days in the company of men who consider sarcasm as form of encouragement. 🧱

In all seriousness it’s great to see two young lads choosing this career, Olly (white hat)has been long over due a mention and has been with us since July and making great progress onsite guided by a great team at Stratton with Scott, Phil, Callum & Taighan

Matty has just joined us in the last two weeks and is already showing great potential, he has already shown a good eye for stonework, there is no doubt both Matty & Olly are going to become first class Brickayers.

We also have Aidan who joined us recently as a third year apprentice he is close to completing his apprenticeship and we look forward to getttng him across the finish line, he has been making great progress I don’t have any photos of Aidan yet as he’s been moving that fast…. He is currently at our Ness side development, Working under the guidance of Kenny.

MORGAN SINDALL WORLD OF WORK TASTERS 🧱👷‍♂️

We took part in a brilliant two days at Fort George supporting Morgan Sindall’s World of Work Tasters and giving pupils from schools across the Highlands the opportunity to try bricklaying for themselves.

Our team of John, Phil & Douglas, left the event genuinely impressed by the attitude, effort and enthusiasm shown by the pupils.

They listened, got involved and weren’t afraid to give it a go exactly what these events are all about.

Days like these give young people a valuable hands on introduction to construction while helping them understand the careers and apprenticeship opportunities available within the industry. If even one pupil leaves considering a future in the trade, it has been time well spent.

A huge thank you to Morgan Sindall for inviting us to take part and to everyone involved in organising another excellent event.

🧱 QUALITY STARTS BELOW GROUND 🧱

A substructure may eventually be hidden, but it carries everything built above it. Getting it right begins with accurately formed, correctly specified and good quality concrete footings.

From there, every detail of the masonry matters:

• Using the specified blocks with the correct strength
• Installing the correct lintel sizes with adequate bearings
• Checking drawings carefully for service locations and openings
• Maintaining the correct bond especially above lintels and openings
• Continually checking wall positions, levels and dimensions

The final and often most overlooked stage is a complete size check before handing the substructure back to the civil contractor.

Overall dimensions, diagonals, wall positions, openings and service locations should all be verified. Never assume that because it looks right, it measures right.

This is the last opportunity to identify discrepancies before backfilling and follow on works turn a straightforward correction into a costly problem.

Quality starts below ground because everything above depends on it ✅

BACK AT FORT GEORGE — 29TH & 30TH SEPTEMBER! 🧱👷‍♂️

One week tomorrow, we’ll be returning to Fort George for Morgan Sindall’s two day World of Work Tasters event, taking place on the 29th and 30th of September.

We look forward to welcoming pupils from schools across the Highlands and giving them the opportunity to get hands on, try bricklaying for themselves and learn more about the different careers and apprenticeship routes available within construction.

We’re proud to play our part in showcasing the trade, sharing our experience and hopefully inspiring some of the next generation to consider a future in our industry.

We’d like to wish Steven Mackay all the very best as he leaves CCL to begin a new chapter in his career.

Steven has been a hugely popular and valued member of our team. Versatile, dependable and always willing to help, he could be asked last minute to drive to Glasgow to collect materials one day and working in Elgin the next, nothing was ever a problem.

Steven will be genuinely missed by everyone at CCL.

With wall-tie placement and fixing firmly in the spotlight, many of our current timber-frame details now require ties at 225mm horizontal centres rather than the previous 450mm spacing.

That means twice as many ties require attention, making clean and disciplined workmanship more important than ever.
