What is it with shower switches? Out to a job today to replace a shower switch, loose connection and back box too shallow. This led to the cables being squished into the box which in turn broke the box, and a heat build up at the terminal which burnt it out. All the classic signs of a bathroom fitter having a crack!

Replaced the switch, pulled though a nice fresh bit of cable (heat had travelled right up and burnt out the insulation) and deeper back box to house all the cables without excess strain on the switch - a proper job!

A rewire recently completed in Dalneigh. We originally carried out an EICR on the property and among other things, found many of the insulation resistance tests were passable but very near the threshold for a fail. As the customer had just purchased the property and planned to do a lot of renovation work throughout, we suggested it would be the perfect time for a rewire.

The customer decided to go ahead which was a wise move, as all the horrors became more apparent when we got under the floors! Connector blocks and taped up cables everywhere and not a cable clip in sight!

We now have a nice tidy install, fully kitted out with modern safety features of RCBOs and surge protection.

If you are moving into a property, we always suggest getting an EICR done before moving in, as you can identify and fix any issues before the property is lived in, when it can become much harder to fix.

A consumer unit tested today as part of an EICR vs a consumer unit we changed last week. As you can see, world's apart!

The board we tested (installed in 2021) was full of circuit faults and regs violations, and the sparky who did it never bothered to test or issue a certificate, unsurprisingly.

I don't know how some sparkys sleep at night, knowingly leaving things in a potentially dangerous state like this.

As of today I'll be off for 5-6 weeks for the arrival of our second baby. I will still be occasionally checking messages and emails with the aim of organising jobs for the re-start, but the work phone will be off for most of this time.
