The final edition of the acquired taste series…! A job I am so so glad to see over the line 🥵 firstly because Molly finally has en-suite back, and secondly because it is such a time consuming room to do, more work went into this room than any other in the house. Molly and I had the loose outline for design ages ago and not a huge amount changed. Pink toilet was initially an idea for the downstairs WC so when we didn’t go for it there we thought it could work in en-suite. Basin is a bit of an extravagance and partially the reason we now can’t get an October holiday 🥴

A tricky shaped en-suite as it is, we get loads of requests for moving the toilet but it’s just not a feasible change due to the stairwell head being underneath the unit area. I have done what I think is one of the better options with it which is move the shower wall 100mm to get a slightly bigger tray in, sticking with furniture end then we’ve opted for a wall hung pan for cleanliness and the illusion of more space.

We ended up being the best part of 12 days on this (we were split up for parts of it) but the average bathroom takes us 4 now so that gives an indication of the time swallowed on such an awkward shaped small room.

I feel so bad with how long this dragged on and molly was without an en-suite for almost 6 weeks 😩 it got started then other projects and work got in the way - but it’s done now and she loves it, I did a wee dash down to rituals to get a nice diffuser and hand soap to tie in with the room (and to get rid of the smell of silicone 🤢) 😇. She said “I don’t need all that fancy lighting you did in the main bathroom” but the first fix got completed whilst she was away on the West Coast, so I snuck it all in when she was away 😂 worth it I think.

I caught up with enquiries and invoices last night, still have a few bits to tie up Monday evening. My next scheduled pricing days are Monday and Tuesday the 5th and 6th, Monday Inverness, Tuesday Black Isle and maybe Nairn/east too.

I completed our own bathroom back in June, and we are both delighted with it.

This room was just a back spare bedroom, essentially a useless box room for us. The plan was always to convert the bathroom at the top of the stairs into an office for us both, and this spare room into the main bathroom. That then allowed for a separate free standing bath and walk in shower instead of the shower over bath like the original room.

This was the first room in the house we’d sort of fully designed and made decisions on even prior to moving in, and to be honest the finished article isn’t too far from the original plans. Towel rail location chopped and changed but there wasn’t ever really going to be an ideal spot for it in this room sadly. Position of bath was a nightmare for me to decide, centre of window threw it too far right and close to towel rail, so I settled on “centre of tile” which I was then in turn able to work in with loads of other things, for example floor setting out and the whole wall round the window I was able to make it land on as good as full tiles. It does work, it looks fine but I was really struggling to commit to it being off centre 😭😅

Tiles are all from Tiles and Stone direct in Inverness. The suite is “Faber” from Roper Rhodes, supplied by Wolseley. The bath I got online, very weary of its longevity…but I know a plumber that can replace it if it does start to fail/discolour 👀 I absolutely love the brushed nickel Faber stuff, the only thing Molly had to be be mildly pursuaded on…

I still cannot fathom how much I struggled with the 1200x600 green tiled wall, a very humbling experience I didn’t think I’d get the top row on without calling in a big strong man to come and help me 😫 managed to get it JUST but arms and upper body were like jelly for the rest of the day, very embarrassing 😳

James helped me with the first fix and strip out prior to his summer break, then when he was back helped me with the heavy lifting of the glass and the accessories. Wee Molly helped me lift the bath in 🤣👍🏻
Thank you also to Adam who as always is super patient with me and my insane lighting and switch requests, switches for everything and loads of remote lighting and things on this one so plenty to do on that front 🥴 all the strip lights change colour as do the ceiling lights, unnecessary extravagance but anyone who knows me knows the entire house is controlled by Philips Hue 💡 and I love it. Some pics are when it’s semi finished, some when it’s just been cleaned so floor looks soaked and some just when there is a decent sunset ☀️

It’s a great room to have completed early on in our mini renovation, as it’s so fresh clean and perfect room to relax in when bathing and what not. As I said further up we are both so happy with it, glad we stuck to original design and glad we took the risks on the black bath and tray as it’s something a wee bitty different! There are still a few odds and ends to tie up like painting the facings and silicone round window, but I’ll catch it at some point 🙂 Molly chose accessories for the room and chose to go for a rust colour on the towels/mats, soap and the blind to the in with the brown streaks on the green tile, works so well.

I fully caught up with things last week, I do now have a few more quotes to get out which I’ll try do Sunday or an evening next week. Calendar has filled very fast again just in the last 2 weeks or so maybe one free week in November and a few in December.

It’s been another busy year for us so far which I’m very grateful for, and it’s felt particularly manic for me as we moved in here in April and I have done my usual and gone all guns blazing 🥵 hoping to get a week off in October 🙏🏻

I am absolutely obsessed with this wee bathroom we did back in May 👀 forgot to post it after popping by to get some finished pictures a few weeks ago. Some pics are pre decoration/floor.

Clients designed the room themselves and supplied the majority of the kit, most of which came from Crosswater. They had a real clear vision in their heads and it was fun seeing it all come together in line with their images/drawings. This bathroom was fitted about 10 years ago to not a great standard, and had suffered some of the worst rot we had seen. So bad one of the joists had to be replaced, along with the entire floor and all plasterboard (which is pretty standard anyway). The transformation is quite crazy on this one.

All plumbing, tiling and joinery works by James and I. Flooring was fitted by the clients own installer, and decorating and wallpaper was done by Colin 🇬🇧

I have had a day today of major catch ups which included 50+ WhatsApp’s, countless emails, getting back to folks left right and centre and catching up with all quotes. If you feel I’ve forgotten about you, please message me and I will tend to anything else tomorrow and over weekend.

A slightly calmer week for us this week getting this bathroom in Drakies renovated. Fresh upgrade, removing the partition has made the room feel a lot bigger. Alcoves added in the dead space above the toilet with some lighting which is controlled by a dimmer switch so the brightness can be lowered if needed. Low level walk in shower, a 1200x900 and the use of the two deflector panels removes the need for a full enclosure. 2 drawer wall hung unit and an HIB mirror cabinet means there is plenty of storage for toiletries etc also. The door will get re hung so it’s handed the other way and opening against the wall, which will also create a feel of more space. We relocated the towel rail to under the window to allow this.

Will be catching up with various bits this evening and Sunday, as well as doing some quotes. Back out on Monday for the next load of pricing which I’ve not scheduled fully yet but will touch base with folks shortly or over the weekend.

We completed two rooms this week, which is a crazy amount of work for us both but the second room was squeezed in due to the client needing it ASAP due to a decline in mobility.

First room is a beautiful transformation but hands down the worst room we have ever done for being off level/walls leaning. Best way to describe it is the builders that built Drakies but they were absolutely blazing whilst putting every room together. I don’t know if it’s the same crew that did Drakies did Boarstone too 👀 someone will know! Door wall had an 80mm(!!) run in it one end of the room to the other, and every wall was leaning back and side to side by 2 inches. Every single tile had to go on and off the wall 3/4 times to get scribed or packed out. Floor running off level by 25mm as well, and the ceiling was up and down by 15mm across the room ☹️🫣 before any Karen’s start suggesting anything regarding the walls, we had re sheeted and re built what we could but in terms of the bent door wall it adjoined a cupboard, hallway and bedroom so without some major remodelling we were snookered and had to work to what was there.

Client designed the room themselves, very little room for change it layout change as it is tiny. They also supplied their own tiles (these are actually ceramic believe it or not, first time I’ve seen 600x600 ceramic) and basin unit, and the rest of the kit is from Wolseley.

Second room is a simple but effective upgrade in a bungalow in Holm Dell for the clients who had no use for the bath, James stripped this himself Thursday and got it replumbed resheeted and tray down Friday before rejoining me at Boarstone for a late second fix after I had slowly battled through the tiling. Fully wet walled, PVC ceiling, vinyl click flooring and new suite. This one in holm Dell didn’t even have a sheet of wet wall on by 12 afternoon yesterday/Saturday those after photos were taken about half 9 last night 🥵 we wanted to push on and get it finished to minimise disruption for the client where possible. Feel this is an insane turn around for any team though, we do have the advantage of working together for over a decade now so we are very seasoned 🥳

However, there will now be a time sheet coming in from James with 2 x 14 hour shifts on it and some savage overtime, may actually just block him seems like the best option 😂 what a rough first week and shock to the system after being in the sun in Turkey the week prior. He’s a grafter though, and well looked after I promise 😇

On to the next one, which you guessed it, it’s bloody Drakies! But will feel like heaven compared to the week we’ve just had.

Still aiming for small works Friday and I’m aware of various messages this week that I’ve still not quite had time to reply to but will try get back to you all tomorrow.

Last year just before Christmas I had put up a post saying we’d had a very late cancellation which had freed up some time, we ended up filling that time very well tiling and installing 3 bathrooms in a new build in Culbokie. The couple designed the rooms themselves, all 3 were different to each other with really modern and classy choices. I absolutely love all three of these rooms. As per usual, the lighting ends up making all the difference 😍. The home owner did their own sauna in the en-suite and it looks unreal.

I was out pricing yesterday for the first time in months, the day was completed overloaded (my own fault) which resulted in me having to reschedule a few appointments. I am going to try get out again Monday 13th July, and hopefully an evening for folks who work full time/out. I will be in touch with everyone to reschedule for this. Apologies also for any miscommunications over the last few weeks, I had somehow got dates wrong for yesterdays pricing day 🥲

We have some availability for September for bigger jobs, shower areas and smaller jobs we should be able to accommodate August time.

We are both back to work this week and ready for the next phase of bookings 🙂 I am also scheduling in a day for snagging/return trips for fitting accessories and mirrors on recent projects which I will be in touch with folks for asap.

Acquired taste alert 👀 our wee WC is almost finished, I just need to fit the facings which I’m planning doing tomorrow…

Did this room a few weeks ago but hadn’t got round to getting proper pictures.

It feels nice to have one room finished, it’s exactly how we wanted it and we’re both delighted with it.

The basin is panda marble and I understated the weight of it (22kg) so there was a lot of wood work behind the scenes to ensure a decent fixing 🫣

I changed the layout of the room, luckily for me Tullochs do a 4 inch pop up behind the basin and the toilet in these rooms, so although it wasn’t easy it is possible to change the layout. We really wanted a mirror above the basin which was the main reason for the change.

The original was dull and horrible and only ended up being first room to get renovated as I had to destroy the walls looking for hot and cold feeds for my outdoor taps (also an excuse to get rid of this hideous WC to be honest)

I’m now tackling the main bathroom, as I say had no intention of them being done so close to each other but it’s just how it’s landed. Say a wee prayer for clean freak molly who is navigating life in a building site 👀😂

Busy fortnight getting 3 rooms renovated in the one house. All 3 are completely different styles and designs and they all look great. However, the next person who asks for metros (or mosaics actually) will be getting blocked and reported for spam 😂🫠

Main bathroom has wet wall feature panels from Fibo, tiled sections of wall and a tiled floor with ceiling panels. En-suite has metros half height and full height in the wet area with a vinyl click floor. WC is metros half height and a hex daisy mosaic tiled floor.

All the tiles were from Topps Tiles, and all bathroom materials, furniture and brassware from Wolseley. Ceiling panels from Ceiling2Floor. Small decorating works still required for the en-suite, and some bathroom pics still have the temporary bath panel on. We also moved the shaver sockets to inside the units so things can be on charge without wires hanging about. Also the additional work of putting the heating pipes into the wall to make it so much neater, a lot of work trying to get the pipes through in these houses but worth it for a neater finish we think 🤔

We’re heading into another busy week, and then it will be our summer break. James is jetting off on a well earned holiday ✈️ ☀️ and I’ll be…doing my own bathroom 🫪😵‍💫 so excited to get rid of the bath that’s in this house. I never planned for it to clash so close with our WC getting renovated but it is what it is, Molly is having to live in a building site temporarily 🫣

An upstairs bathroom we finished a few weeks back 🚿 just popped back today to finally put the plinth on after not being able to find a spare minute the last 3 weeks.

Client made brilliant choices on this one, nice a neutral with the brass ware makes for a nice, warm room.

No scope for layout change, it was a tricky wee room due to it being a loft conversion, but the main request was extra storage which we managed to achieve by putting a run of Calyspo furniture in under the window. A wee bit of a nervous one lifting the shower glass in this close to a PVC ceiling, and a lot of first fix measuring to ensure it was going to fit height wise! 😅😵‍💫

A crazy busy few weeks has left me miles behind on what feels like everything just now!

A very full calendar as always, paired with moving house has seen the last month just disappear. I’m further behind than ever on quotes and correspondence but I will do my absolute best to make a huge dent in this in the evenings this week. I am very sorry to anyone who is waiting for anything, I’ve kept up as best I can but it’s still falling way short!

These images are of a lovely wee en-suite, very coincidentally in the same street I’ve moved to 😅 clients basic initial requests were for a mirror above the basin, maintaining some element of storage or ideally getting in slightly better storage, and a walk in shower. It’s a massively tricky en-suite in terms of sizing, and the door is in an awkward position. Only option was to move the door down 120mm or so, to allow a wall to wall walk in shower 🚿. Massive first fix with a full layout change too, and when you lift the floor in this model of en-suite it feels like every single wire and pipe for the entire house is under it 🙄😣 so certainly not the easiest. Some photos are pre silicone for the eagle eyes that notice the gaps where there are changes of plane 👀

All works by James and I, a wee Saturday shift yesterday seen this one over the line and a massive thanks to Molly our emergency cleaner who came and got everything back in order and looking tip top for clients return home from holiday 😂 whilst James and I had to get onto the next one!

Bookings have stalled we are still looking at perhaps August, there might be a few loose days here and there to squeeze various things in if anyone needs any shower areas or small works done urgently. I do have my next pricing days loosely scheduled, but really need to clear the decks first.

It’s been such a whirlwind month I failed to recognise our 10 year anniversary 🥲 which was middle of May. 10 years self employment feels insane, but I enjoy it and wouldn’t change it. As always I am very grateful to James for all his hard work and very high level of reliability over the years. What could I gift to a member of staff for 10 years service, a BMW or something?? 👀 open to suggestions from anyone, unless your name is James 😂

I am off to enjoy a day off, after a wee but of celebrations this last few weekends… might treat myself to a gin later, and might even make it double 😉🍀🏆
