We were very saddened to hear of the passing of John Wink.

John was not only a fellow architectural business owner and a well-known figure within the local community, but also a school friend of Julie’s, making this loss particularly poignant.

John was a hugely respected member of the local profession, and his contribution to architecture and business in the area will be remembered by many.

Our thoughts are with John’s family, friends and colleagues at this very difficult time.

Rest in peace, John.

It is with sadness and heavy hearts that we share the passing of John on Friday 21st August 2026.

Since starting JWD 16 years ago, John has been extremely dedicated and determined to help us all and our clients, no problem was too big or too small. We will continue to do this in his honour.

The office will be closed on Monday but we will be available again from Tuesday. Please reach out to us with any concerns on your projects or if you'd like to share your memories of John.

Please bear with us as we navigate life and the business without John.

Our thoughts are with John's family and close friends, he will be sorely missed by everyone.

Planning Success ✅

We're delighted to share that planning permission in principle has been unanimously approved by Aberdeen City Council's Local Review Body for a new retirement dwelling at South Lasts Farm.

This positive outcome follows months of work developing a robust case for the proposal, exploring planning policy, farm succession and the long-term sustainability of rural businesses. Following careful consideration, the application received unanimous support from the Local Review Body.

We're particularly pleased for our clients, who can now begin planning the next chapter for the farm and its future generations.

With approval now secured, we're looking forward to developing a bespoke home that supports the ongoing success of this family-run farming business for years to come.

The images below show the existing site, where we'll now begin developing proposals for the next stage of the project.

Summer Inspiration | Windermere Jetty Museum ☀️

With the summer holidays in full swing, it's the perfect time to visit places that inspire great design.

Cameron, recently visited the Windermere Jetty Museum in the Lake District and captured some fantastic photos of this award-winning project by Carmody Groarke.

The museum is centred around three striking vaulted spaces, each framing views of the restored boats and Lake Windermere beyond. At its heart is a unique wet dock, allowing visitors to experience the historic vessels while they remain afloat and protected from the elements.

Alongside the exhibition spaces, the museum also houses a dedicated conservation workshop where traditional boatbuilding skills are helping preserve the rich maritime heritage of the Lakes. One of the highlights is Osprey, a beautifully restored boat originally built in 1902, demonstrating how heritage and modern conservation can work hand in hand.

It's always inspiring to see architecture that not only responds so thoughtfully to its setting but also supports the stories and craftsmanship it was designed to celebrate.

Thanks to Cameron for sharing these fantastic photos with us!

Summer Social ☀️

A few weeks ago, the McWilliam Lippe Architects team took some time away from the drawing board for our annual summer social.

The evening kicked off with a cocktail making masterclass at The Spiritualist, followed by a fantastic meal at Café Andaluz.

It's always great to step away from the day-to-day, spend time together outside the office and celebrate the people who make our practice what it is. A great opportunity to catch up, unwind and enjoy an evening as a team.

A big thank you to everyone involved for making it such an enjoyable evening!

⚽️And so the final whistle has blown on the World Cup along with the office sweepstake. John was the lucky winner who picked Spain out of the hat and it was all smiles as Cameron and Eilidh presented him with his prize and he celebrated in style by parading their Lego World Cup trophy around the office. We will go again for the Euros in 2028 but until then, Viva España! 🇪🇸

Planning approval secured. ✅

We're delighted to share that planning permission has been granted for a residential extension in the countryside.

Designed to transform the way the home is experienced, the proposal introduces a range of new leisure and wellness spaces, including a cinema room, bar area and gym. Each element has been carefully integrated with the existing property to create a seamless extension that enhances both the home and the lifestyle of its owners.

Externally, the contemporary design combines vertical timber-effect cladding with dark grey brick detailing, creating a refined material palette that complements its rural surroundings while giving the extension a distinctive architectural identity.

With planning approval now secured, we're looking forward to progressing the project into the next stage of technical design and seeing the vision continue to take shape.

From concept to construction 🏡

There's something particularly rewarding about comparing a project at the design stage with its progress on site.

These before-and-after images capture the transformation currently underway on one of our residential projects, where a series of carefully considered alterations are giving the home a new lease of life.

While the changes may seem subtle on paper, seeing them take shape really highlights the impact that thoughtful design can have. Enhancing both the appearance and functionality of an existing home while respecting its original character.

It's always exciting to see our drawings become reality, and we look forward to sharing the completed project in the coming months.
