One of those jobs that doesn’t come around very often, and a real pleasure to be part of.

After a tree struck the bridge earlier this year, we carried out extensive structural repairs, followed by a full repoint in traditional lime mortar, keeping the work in character with the original construction.

A lovely old bridge with plenty of character and a restoration we’re proud to put our name to.

Skilled Labourer Wanted

Douglas Masonry is looking for a reliable skilled labourer to help with a number of upcoming projects across the Scottish Borders.

Experience in lime mortar would be preferred, although we’d also be interested in hearing from skilled labourers with a good work ethic and willingness to learn.

Good rates of pay, with ongoing work available for the right person.

A cracking transformation on this tired old gable 🙌

The masonry was carefully restored, including localised rebuilding, a full rake-out and repoint in traditional lime mortar. The redundant chimney was also removed, with the roof neatly reinstated to finish everything off.

Thanks to Cameron Page and Kevin Rae for getting the roof sorted for me. 🤝

A proper restoration that’s strengthened the gable while keeping its traditional character.

Some difference to this old stone gable in the Scottish Borders 👌

Chimney safely taken down, defective stonework rebuilt, roof reinstated and the full gable repointed in traditional lime mortar. A proper restoration and well worth it for the finished result!

LABOURER WANTED - DOUGLAS MASONRY

*Edit: POSITION FILLED

Due to a growing workload and several larger projects commencing this year, Douglas Masonry is looking for a labourer to join the team.

We specialise in traditional stone masonry, lime pointing, restoration and conservation work throughout the Scottish Borders.

The role will involve:
• Mixing mortar and preparing materials
• Moving stone and assisting with lifting operations
• Loading and unloading tools and materials
• Setting up and maintaining tidy work areas
• Assisting with stone repairs, walling and restoration projects
• General labouring duties

Requirements:
• Physically fit and capable of manual work and heavy lifting
• Reliable, punctual and hardworking
• Willing to work outdoors in all weather conditions
• Driving licence preferred
• Construction experience beneficial but not essential
• Able to be in Kelso or on site every morning

While this is primarily a labouring role, there will be opportunities for the right person to learn traditional stonemasonry, restoration and conservation skills over time. This role would particularly suit someone at the start of their working career who is keen to learn practical skills and develop within the trade.

Hand cut and dressed sandstone lintel prepared today for a restoration project in the Scottish Borders. Matching the original finish is all part of preserving the character of these historic buildings.

Traditional craftsmanship takes time, but the end result is worth it.
