This week (15 April 2026) we saw a major update to the UK wiring regulations (BS 7671) go live - the first significant change in a few years. Itโs not something most people need to follow closely, but we're quite excited about it - and you may want to know that it underpins every safe and compliant electrical installation in your home, farm or business!
From this week on, across the UK electrical industry:
๐ New electrical work will start to be carried out under the updated standards - thereโs a 6 month transition period, so you may still see your certificates referencing the previous version in the short term (but that stops on 15 October 2026)
๐ The changes reflect how electrical use is evolving (including EV charging, energy efficiency, and more complex installations like in healthcare settings)
๐ When you have work done (by any firm!), it should be designed, installed and certified to the correct standard at the time - thatโs what protects you if anything ever needs checked, sold, or insured
๐ ... and "Competent Person" trade association schemes such as NICEIC, NAPIT, and SELECT will require demonstration of a member firm's access to Amendment 4 for ongoing certification
This is exactly why keeping electrical training and professional memberships up to date matters - standards move on, and jobs should be done in line with current regulations (with safety and compliance the number 1 consideration!).
If any of our customers are interested in the detail behind the update, itโs published by the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET), who produce the wiring regulations used across the UK:
