Nestled in the Howgill Fells, the traditional barns at Thwaite Farm were deteriorating - until grant funding brought us onboard to help turn things around 🌾

Preserving their historic character was just as important to us as making them structurally sound. And while heritage conservation was the primary goal, the family needed them to remain practical, working farm buildings.

Watching these historic structures transform from vulnerable to secure was an emotional experience for the family - and we are so proud to have played a part in saving them for future generations.

This project is featured in our latest piece in Issue 52 of Conservation & Heritage magazine, alongside a look at how the approach used at Thwaite is now being applied across 21 further barns in Cumbria.

Preserving a piece of Cumbrian history at Levens Hall 🏰

Sitting just outside the Lake District National Park, Levens Hall is famous for its Grade I listed parkland and the world’s oldest topiary garden. Welcoming over 30,000 visitors a year, this historic Elizabethan home requires thoughtful, traditional care to keep it looking its best.

So what repairs did we make? 🛠️

👉 Stripping away harmful cement render and replacing it with traditional lime mortar and limewash so the building can breathe.
👉 Re-roofing the hipped slate roofs and replacing lead details.
👉 Restoring parapet stonework and internal plaster.

Specialist conservation work like this ensures the Hall remains a safe, vibrant landmark for the public and the Bagot family for years to come.

We are proud to see our work featured in the latest edition of Conservation & Heritage magazine (Issue 52) 📖

Traditional barns are a fundamental part of the Lake District’s agricultural identity and World Heritage status. We are helping safeguard 21 agricultural buildings across the National Park through a major conservation initiative backed by the Lake District National Park Authority.

Preserving these structures not only protects our cultural landscape but also keeps traditional building crafts alive for future generations.

We are delighted to announce that Luke Jackson has been promoted to Associate at Crosby Granger Architects 👏

Luke joined us in 2024 and has since taken a leading role in managing and delivering projects, ranging from sensitive interventions in historic buildings and landscapes, to rural development and long-term Whole Estate Planning.

In his new role, Luke will continue to lead projects while taking on greater responsibility for design reviews, staff development, client relationships and the strategic growth.

The promotion also brings our Associate team to four, strengthening our expertise across architecture, heritage and conservation in Cumbria and beyond.

Breathtaking landscapes and historic restoration in the Yorkshire Dales 🏔️

Deep in the Snaizeholme valley, three traditional barns integral to the area's agricultural heritage were falling into decline. We partnered with The Woodland Trust to give these historic structures a new lease of life as practical hubs for local conservation efforts.

Restoring buildings in a remote, weather-tested valley wasn't easy, but traditional techniques made all the difference:

🪨 Local sandstone slate roofing
🌧️ Cast iron rainwater goods
⚡ Subtle modern welfare & tech upgrades for site volunteers

We are thrilled to announce that we have been appointed to lead the major restoration of St Mary’s Church in Kirkby Lonsdale ⛪️

Dating back to Norman times, this Grade I listed building is one of only five 'major churches' in Cumbria - and is currently on the Heritage at Risk Register.

Following a crucial £370,446 development grant from The National Lottery Heritage Fund, our Kendal-based team will be leading the professional consultancy team to develop plans for a full £4.6M restoration project.

The ambitious project will address urgent conservation needs, including major roof and tower leaks, while reimagining the space for the local community with new event capabilities, enhanced heritage interpretation and accessible facilities.

As a local practice, we are deeply invested in the prosperity of Kirkby Lonsdale and ensuring this historic landmark remains open "for all, for all time."

This is an opportunity to take the lead on a diverse portfolio of projects across the UK, from listed buildings, churches and castles to rural estates and carefully considered new architecture in sensitive settings.

We're looking for an ARB-registered architect with at least five years' post-Part 3 experience who is confident running projects independently and enjoys working closely with clients, consultants and contractors.

Chloe Granger recently visited St John's Church in Blackburn along with colleagues Andrew Bodenham, Amy Redman, Gabriela Popa and Luke Gardner to carry out a detailed stone survey 📝

During the survey, we identified areas of stonework that require defrassing or redressing to ensure any loose material is safely removed, as well as some replacements. The do-less approach will help to protect the public, as well as preserve as much of the historic fabric of the church as possible.

Whilst this inspection is part of a larger project, regular inspections like these are an important part of maintaining our built heritage for future generations.
