Some photographs of a recent piano project we did in Knowle.
The mouldings were fitted by a carpenter prior to our arrival and this certainly gives some nice detail to the otherwise plain panels
The removal of the lid and key cover hinges is time consuming, there can sometimes 80 more, and we always cover the internals so that no screws can drop inside. These would be almost impossible to retrieve and if they get lodged will certainly affect or even damage the piano when it’s played.
All the internal workings and the back panel are masked off so no overspray can get past. Paying attention to this now is better than unmasking to find paint is inside the piano.
Everything is then cleaned down, sanded and thoroughly vacuumed and dusted off.
The piano body is then given one coat of adhesion primer with a Wagner low pressure sprayer. All the panels, lid an key cover is sprayed away from the main body and placed on a rack
When the primer is dry everything is lightly sanded, vacuumed and dusted off. Also paying attention to the floor because it that is dusty it will kick up and land on the finish coats.
The chosen finish colour was to be an off black but that didn’t work and looked like a very dark grey when applied so we switched to Benjamin Moore’s standard black in Scuff-X Eggshell. Two coats of this were applied with a Tecnover airless sprayer and Graco Silver Gun.
When all the parts were dry we removed the masking and refitted all the lids and panels, again putting some brown masking over the internals to make sure no screws are lost inside.
We think this project turned out very well.
