Particulate, gas, vapour and combination filters do different jobs.

Particulate filters are designed for dust, fibres and airborne particles. Gas and vapour filters protect against specific gases or chemical vapours.

Where several hazards are present, a combination filter may be required.

The filter must also be compatible with the respirator. A filter that attaches securely is not automatically suitable.

Leaving mask filters in service too long is one of the most common causes of RPE failure.

Correct protection depends on three checks:

• Select the correct filter for the hazard.
• Confirm that it matches the respirator and is fitted securely.
• Replace it at the right time.

Particulate filters should be changed when breathing resistance increases or visible contamination appears.

Gas and vapour filters should be replaced according to time in use or the manufacturer’s guidance. Do not rely on smell alone.
