Not all conservation heroes wear capes... some wear collars!

Wild Kielder Dexter Cattle are helping Forestry England deliver conservation grazing across Wild Kielder, playing an important role in creating and maintaining diverse habitats for wildlife.

Their Monil collars use virtual fencing technology, allowing graziers to guide where the cattle graze, through an app. This reduces the need for fencing and helps to focus grazing where it can have the biggest benefit for nature.

A perfect combination of modern technology and a team of hard-working cattle, working together for nature recovery!

🚒🌲 Multi-Agency Wildfire Preparedness Exercise at Kielder 🌲🚒

Last Friday, Forestry England joined partners from the Fire & Rescue Service High Volume Pump (HVP) teams, Wildfire Teams, Emergency Drone Unit, and Northumbrian Water for a multi-agency training exercise in Kielder Forest.

With the increased risk of wildfires during warmer and drier periods, the exercise tested the ability to move large volumes of water deep into the forest where access to water can be limited. Using specialist HVP equipment, water was successfully pumped an impressive 3 kilometres from Kielder Water into the forest.

It was great to see the exercise run smoothly and to witness first-hand the capabilities, coordination and professionalism of all the teams involved. Training exercises like this help ensure we are prepared to respond quickly and effectively should a wildfire occur.

⚠️ Trail Closure Notice – Bloodybush Trail ⚠️

Unfortunately, the Bloodybush Trail at Kielder is currently closed until further notice due to damage to a section of the boardwalk.

The closure is necessary to ensure the safety of all visitors while we assess the damage and carry out essential repairs. We are working to arrange repairs as soon as possible and will provide updates when the trail can safely reopen.

We apologise for any inconvenience and appreciate your understanding and cooperation.

Please respect all closure signage and barriers in place.

With the forecast set for hot and dry conditions across Northumberland, the risk of wildfires is much higher.

If you’re heading outdoors to enjoy the sunshine 🌳
👉 Pack a picnic - not a BBQ.

Disposable barbecues and campfires can quickly get out of control in dry grass and countryside. What might seem harmless can spark a fire that spreads in seconds.

🚫 Avoid BBQs and campfires
🔥 Heat can linger long after you’ve left
🌬️ Dry ground + wind = rapid fire spread
🐾 Fires can devastate wildlife and habitats

✅ Stay safe this summer:

Recently our team have been dealing with damage to some trails at Kielder caused by heavy electric motorbikes.

Whilst legal electrically assisted pedal cycles (EAPCs) are permitted on our cycling trail network, electric motorbikes (even if insured and taxed) are considered motorbikes and are not permitted, including those fitted with throttles (e.g. not pedal activated).

Adaptive bikes (e-MTBs or non-standard cycles) are welcome in the nation’s forests provided they meet the EAPC regulations.

Our team and volunteers work hard to maintain our network of cycle trails and damage caused by non-permitted vehicles takes away resource from other parts of our trail network - thank you for your understanding.

Summer weather...

We are now entering hotter weather as this week proceeds.

Kielder Forest is a great place to come and enjoy the outdoors and also benefit from the cooling shades within the trees.

With such hot dry conditions, no BBQ's or fires of any kind are permitted anywhere across the 250 miles of forest to ensure we safeguard England's largest forest, which this year celebrates 100 years!
