Tree Preservation Orders (TPOs) are crucial for safeguarding specific trees or aggregations of trees. Nevertheless, they can occasionally be challenging to manage. In this instance, an extensive Sycamore coppice stump had been permitted to significantly exceed its surroundings. Consequently, a diminutive bungalow garden was predominantly shaded for the majority of the day. The council would only authorised a 4m crown lift and a 2m reduction in branches growing towards the darkened dwelling.

Despite the very limited permission, the garden now appears more spacious, and the bungalow interior has become considerably lighter. Additionally, the views have been enhanced.

Hedges need taming? Yes we also maintain/trim/reduce hedges! We usually get a call when they grow out of the gardener’s comfort zone 😂
But we don’t do landscaping/jetwashing/gutters/fencing etc. Just trees & hedges, very well.

FREE Firewood?
At Skywalkers DTS, we don’t sell logs. But, once we have enough to keep our own fire burning for the following season, we do, from time to time, give away timber if the client cannot use it. It’s ALWAYS a case of ‘first come first served’. It may be manageable sized branches, or rings ready for splitting, hard or softwood. Well, our barn is full to the brim now! So, to be among the first to hear about the giveaways, you will need to LIKE or FOLLOW our page. (Not just this post, but our page)
We are also going to start running a monthly competition to WIN a bag of split hardwood logs. (With FREE local delivery!) It will be a simple LIKE, TAG & SHARE, so to make sure you don’t miss your chance to WIN, LIKE or FOLLOW our page!

This was an interesting afternoon last week!
A very large old Ash failed last year, and fell directly across a private pathway. With no access for large machinery to assist, we diligently set to work with nothing but a big a saw, a couple of wedges and something to hit them with!
Fallen trees can be extremely tricky to deal with. The key is judging where the weight of the trunk is supported, as one cut to far can mean getting the chainsaw bar jammed between several tonnes of timber. But as usual, we got this one spot on. Removing some large chunks to prop up the stump side first, meant that when the Final Cut through was made, the stump only moved a few centimetres. We then tidied off both sides to allow plenty of access.
Although there was probably close to £1000 worth of firewood in the tree, all the timber will be left as even more valuable habitat for the local wildlife.

Another Oak saved…
What’s going on here then?!
Whilst tidying up some small trees and shrubs in and around a VERY steep (but beautiful) garden, we were also talked into removing and treating some very out of control Bamboo. Thank goodness we did! This Oak that was almost completely surrounded my the pesky panda grass was found to be seriously compromised. We can only assume that pre Bamboo, some serious damage had been done to the trunk. Although the tree had managed to put on a lot of reactionary growth, it didn’t stop rot getting into the heartwood. All that remained was approximately 40% of the sapwood, the rest was gone or completely rotten! Whilst Oak sapwood (the bit between the bark and the heartwood) is very strong and flexible, had this damage been missed, the Oak would have failed within a year or two at most.
We removed a substantial amount of weight from the crown, until it was safe enough to climb, then Jack went up and finished it off with a pollard. With regular maintenance (repollarding) the reactionary growth in the sapwood will catch up, and this Oak will be around for many years to come.

Ash Dieback is all around us, but every now and then, we come across an example with no visible signs of the disease. This one, tucked away behind a row of tiny terrace houses looked in pretty good health, so we thought it best to give it a light crown reduction. It was protected due to being located within a conservation area, but the tree officer at SHDC agreed that it was far too big for it location, and if left to it’s own devices, would soon become problematic. So permission for the reduction was granted. Fergus got up there and as gently as possible, gave it little trim.
