A gardener in Hull has been acknowledged for his work at Astra Youth Centre in Bransholme, where young people are connecting with nature, developing new skills, and improving their wellbeing through the centre’s innovative gardening project.

Jon Pearson was presented with the prestigious Earthmovers Award at Friends of the Earth’s Yorkshire Summer Action Gathering. The award recognises the dedication of local environmental groups and their members, including the team at Astra Youth Centre.

Jon and Astra Youth Centre’s youth workers guide young people in caring for the centre’s garden at weekly social sessions, enhancing the local environment and encouraging sustainable practices. The sessions, held on Thursday evenings from 4pm–5.30 pm and 6:30–8pm, provide a safe and supportive space for young people to unwind after school, build confidence, and form positive friendships.

Activities have included planting flowers and vegetables, constructing a super hedgehog house, creating a wild hedge row to encourage wildlife, and cooking meals together around the fire pit. These sessions have also provided a creative outlet, with one young person even writing a story that was performed around the fire, demonstrating increased confidence and social skills.

Councillor Linda Tock, portfolio holder for children’s services, said:
“We are delighted to see the positive impact this project has had on young people in Bransholme. Connecting with nature, working as a team, and taking part in creative activities supports mental health, builds confidence, and fosters a strong sense of community. We thank Jon Pearson and all the youth workers at Astra for their dedication and for making this project such a success.”

The project is run in partnership with Rewilding Youth, whose network brought Jon to Astra Youth Centre. Building on its success, there are plans to expand gardening activities into additional social sessions during the week.

What amazing tea time and early evening sessions we watered, dug over beds, planted seeds, cleared our new walkway, cut up all the garden waste to make in to a dead hedge, counted so many ladybirds (34 in one plant alone) trailed butterflies and animals…….

But most of all we had fun in the sun with new young people joining our team to help out, what an amazing afternoon in what’s set to become a magical place for nature, set up and maintained by the young people that love it ❤️

We’re in Westminster with our local action groups and supporters, alongside thousands of people from across the country, to call on MPs to protect what matters most – our climate, nature, health and communities. ✊📣

This is one of the largest environmental lobbies to date, and it’s happening around 100 days before the government is legally required to publish its new climate plan for the UK. It must listen to us and act now, so we can shape a future where people and planet thrive together.

Take action today by calling on Keir Starmer to step up to the challenge and commit to the bold climate action the UK urgently needs. Add your name: https://foe.uk/z985w

Some of the amazing reflection pieces completed by the students at during Mondays session.

They were asked to create anything they liked as a reflection of their time spent in the garden and science pond so far this year.

“I like chasing people with pretend spiders”
“I love the plants a lot, it makes me happy”
“Feel happy, hear wind, bees, birds”
“I hate art” 😂
“It makes me fell calm, chill and happy”

The torrential rain this morning gave us time to have a period of reflection with some of the young people from that had spent time in the pizza garden and the science ponds……and what a blessing this was ❤️

The artwork, quotes, writing and feeling of connection to the spaces are nothing short of inspirational.

When the rain stopped we of course charged round the science ponds, exploring, having fun and being at one with the space, what an amazing day!!!
