Today marks Liverpool's 819th birthday.

On this day in 1207, King John signed the letters that established Liverpool as a free borough and privileged port, beginning a story of innovation, resilience and progress that continues today.

As a Liverpool based business, with local people, local families and local communities at the heart of what we do, we're incredibly proud to play our part in shaping the city's future.

Over the years, we've helped deliver and maintain infrastructure across Liverpool, from flagship routes including The Strand, Lime Street and Edge Lane, East Lancashire Road, to major projects such as Liverpool ONE Bus Station, Alder Hey Children's Hospital, Bramley-Moore Dock Stadium, Anfield and the Port of Liverpool. Through these schemes, we've helped create the connections that keep the city moving while supporting its continued growth and development.

Our commitment goes beyond building roads. Through our circular economy approach, we've recycled over 50,000 tonnes of Liverpool's road materials, ensuring that yesterday's roads become tomorrow's infrastructure. By reusing materials from across the city in new schemes, we're reducing waste, cutting carbon and helping build a more sustainable future for Liverpool.

We're equally proud to invest in Liverpool's people, supporting local employment, developing the next generation through our Highways Academy, apprenticeships and work experience opportunities, and creating lasting opportunities within the communities we serve.

As Liverpool continues to grow, innovate and inspire, we're proud to stand alongside the city, helping create the places, spaces and infrastructure that will serve generations to come.

Celebrating 600,000 Tonnes of HALO™ Laid!

We're proud to announce that over 600,000 tonnes of HALO™ have been successfully laid across the UK, marking another significant milestone in our journey towards a lower-carbon future.

Since its launch, HALO™ has become a proven solution for delivering more sustainable highways infrastructure, supporting projects of all sizes, from local road improvements to flagship schemes in major towns and cities across the country.

Developed using warm-mix asphalt technology and incorporating up to 50% recycled content, HALO™ helps reduce carbon emissions, lower energy consumption during production, minimise the use of virgin materials, and support a more circular approach to construction, all while maintaining the performance, durability and quality our customers expect.

As part of our wider sustainable suite of products, HALO™ sits alongside innovative solutions including HALO FibrePave, HACLA, HAFLOW, RubberPave, HALOBIO and FastPave, each designed to help lower environmental impact, increase resource efficiency and deliver high-performing infrastructure that supports the transition to Net Zero.

Reaching 600,000 tonnes is more than just a milestone. It demonstrates the growing demand for sustainable, innovative solutions that help our industry reduce its environmental impact and move closer to achieving Net Zero.

A huge thank you to our teams, customers and supply chain partners who continue to support the adoption of lower-carbon materials and make achievements like this possible.

600,000 tonnes laid nationwide. More recycled materials, lower carbon emissions, and a clear demonstration of how our innovation is helping drive a more sustainable future for the highways sector.

Where the city meets the sea...

Completed works at Royal Seaforth Dock, with our team delivering another high-quality scheme in one of the region’s most important operational environments.

10/07/2026

To close out Net Zero Week, we're highlighting another pioneering scheme that demonstrates how innovative materials and collaborative delivery can help accelerate decarbonisation across the highways and infrastructure sector.

Delivered in partnership with Murphy Group, Tarmac and Low Carbon Materials, the One Murphy Hub project in Golborne has showcased the first application of ACLA in North West England, creating a carbon-negative car park at Murphy's new operational hub.

Building on the success of our HALOBIO low-carbon asphalt technology, the scheme combined HALOBIO with ACLA, an innovative carbon-negative aggregate developed by Low Carbon Materials. Designed to partially replace traditional asphalt components, ACLA captures and permanently stores carbon dioxide through its biochar-mineral matrix, helping to reduce embodied carbon while contributing to long-term carbon sequestration.

The asphalt mix incorporated 50% recycled and sustainable content, comprising 44% recycled asphalt pavement (RAP) and 6% ACLA, further supporting circular economy principles while reducing reliance on virgin materials. Seamlessly integrated into our proprietary HALO technology, ACLA can be incorporated without changes to laying processes or any compromise in quality and performance. The result is a practical, scalable solution that supports meaningful decarbonisation at the material level while maintaining the standards required for modern infrastructure.

While works remain ongoing, the use of ACLA on the project has already sequestered more than 9.5 tonnes of CO₂, demonstrating the significant potential of carbon-storing materials to support net zero ambitions across the construction industry.

Together, these innovations highlight how collaboration, material innovation and a whole-life approach to project delivery can help create lower-carbon infrastructure while delivering lasting environmental benefits.
