The good, the bad and the Ivy 🍃
After shedding a few limbs over the past 6 months we decided to reduce these 2 Ash trees down to a habitat monolith to remove any further risk. The defects we found beneath the Ivy justified our decision.
Ivy acts as a great habitat for wildlife and can live symbiotically with the tree, although large amounts of Ivy can add excessive weight to limbs causing them to fail. The subsequent wound is quickly covered by rapidly growing Ivy and can cause a significant amount of rot within the stem which, if left unchecked can weaken the stems, add the extra weight from the Ivy and a massive failure can occur ⚠️
Leaving as a monolith removes the risk while retaining key habitat features 🐦🕷️🪳🍄
