🔺What type of Concrete for Garage Floors actually works best?

Building a long-lasting, high quality and neatly finished garage for your home is well worth the investment. Not only will it add a handy and sizable bit of extra storage space to your home, but it will also significantly increase the value of your property too – it definitely ticks all the boxes.

As you construct your new home garage, laying down the concrete floor is one of the trickiest parts of the process, as you will need to decide which variety of wet concrete is the right choice for the job.

Varieties of standardised prescribed concrete are popular choices for garage floors.

1️⃣ Type C30 / ST3 is most commonly used for domestic applications that only require a light duty. As such, it is often used for house floors, or foundations and unreinforced bases for garages.

2️⃣ Type C35 / ST4
As it provides users with a higher level of strength and durability, Type C35 / ST4 provides a more sturdy, wearing option for an unreinforced concrete garage floor.

3️⃣ Type C40 / ST5 is also widely used in domestic applications. It is the strongest of the ST concrete options, which makes it suitable for garage ground floor slabs. It is also a great option if you require reinforced, suspended or ground-bearing flooring.

4️⃣ C20 / Gen3 / ST1
This type of general concrete is also commonly used for domestic applications, such as garage floors. Type C20 / Gen3 / ST1 can also be covered by a permanent flooring finish (such as carpet).

What type do you use?

The term 'cladding' refers to components that are attached to the primary structure of a building to form non-structural, external surfaces. This is as opposed to buildings in which the external surfaces are formed by structural elements, such as masonry walls, or applied surfaces such as render.

Building Safety Fund for the remediation of non-ACM Cladding Systems (England only) Registration prospectus, published by MHCLG in May 2020 suggests that: 'A cladding system includes the components that are attached to the primary structure of a building to form a non-structural external surface. The cladding system includes the weather-exposed outer layer or ‘screen, fillers. Insulation, membranes, brackets, cavity barriers, flashing, fixings, gaskets and sealants.'

Whilst cladding is generally attached to the structure of the building, it typically does not contribute to its stability. However, cladding does play a structural role, transferring wind loads, impact loads, snow loads and its own self-weight back to the structural framework.

In particular, wind causes positive and negative pressure on the surface of buildings and cladding must have sufficient strength and stiffness to resist this load, both in terms of the type of cladding selected and its connections back to the structure.

Cladding is needed to:

Create a controlled internal environment.
Protect the building from external conditions.
Provide privacy and security.
Prevent the transmission of sound.
Provide thermal insulation.
Create an external facade.
Prevent the spread of fire.
Generate an 'airtight' building envelope.
Providing openings for access, daylight and ventilation.
Cladding is often prefabricated in panels that are attached to the structural frame of the building, and some cladding systems can be purchased 'off the shelf'.

Cladding systems may include additional components, such as windows, doors, gutters, roof lights, vents and so on.

Why do you need underfloor heating?

👉 Underfloor heating is normally efficient because it effectively turns the whole floor into a radiator.

☝️The large surface area means it doesn't have to be a high temperature to warm the room – only a couple of degrees warmer than normal room temperature.

✅ It uses 15-40% less energy than traditional radiators.

🔺Timber roof trusses, also known as trussed rafters, are one of the most critical considerations in any residential building project. Before these are designed and ordered, the type of truss required needs to be identified as there are many different options available. When it comes to pricing roof trusses, the original roof truss design, as well as the span and pitch can influence costs depending on the size of the project

The cost of your roof trusses will depend on various factors. To get an accurate quote for roof trusses, you will need to have the following details before you start the process:

Truss type: this depends on the roof shape
Span (mm): refers to the distance across the length of the truss where it bears onto the wall supports.
The pitch (degrees): is the angle of the top chord of the truss as it runs away from the wall head.
The quantity: how many trusses required for the roof space or project in general

✅ Main types of Trusses:

👉35mm standard roof truss: the standard roof truss used for the majority of new build houses across the UK. These trusses can also be used for garages and extensions, as well as self-build projects.
👉Attic standard overhang: these trusses are used when habitable space is required within the room zone. These trusses are designed as attic style with larger sections of timber to support additional loadings which allow people to live within the truss zone.
👉Attic standard overhang, attic cantilevered eaves and attic stubbed eaves all refer to the end detail of the truss only, where the trusses bear onto the wall heads.
👉35mm mono: these are sloped in one direction and often used in porches and for hip end.

If you’ve been wondering how much the required roof trusses will cost for your project, we have the answer.

Here are some of the top perks of underfloor heating:

✅Toasty warm feet! You can walk around barefoot all year. Making stepping out of the bath or shower heavenly!

✅It distributes heat evenly and consistently around each room.

✅A suitably sized unit can heat a larger area than an individual radiator, and works at a lower temperature, so it could reduce your heating bills

✅Less waste – your floors will stay warm, even if the windows are open or the room is draughty.

✅ It’s hidden – so it doesn’t spoil your décor or take up space with bulky radiators.

✅ It can be installed below stone, tile, wood, or carpeted floors (as long as the carpet isn’t too thick - a 1.5 tog is generally considered the maximum suitable thickness).

✅ It can make your home more hygienic – a warmer floor temperature is inhospitable to dust mites. So you’ll have warmer feet and fewer creepy crawlies!

☝️Is underfloor heating actually too expensive?
👉It depends.

❇️ One big consideration is whether you’re building a new home or renovating an existing one. Generally speaking, it will cost more when you’re retrofitting underfloor heating in an existing home. The other factor is whether you’re installing a wet or dry system.

Underfloor heating (wet system) in a new build £5,000 and £7,000 to install.
