Still spreading fertiliser without checking your pH? You could be wasting more than you think 💭

When soil pH is too low, your fertiliser simply can’t work as efficiently as it should. For grassland, the target pH is around 6.5. Drop below that, and key nutrients become harder for your crop to access.

At pH 6.0, phosphorus availability can fall by up to 48%, with nitrogen losses of at least 11%. That’s valuable input going to waste. By applying G-Lime, you can help correct soil pH, improve nutrient availability and get more from every tonne of fertiliser you apply this summer.

Less waste. Better efficiency. Stronger return from your soil ✅

The future of farming starts with knowing what’s happening beneath your boots. Soil health is becoming one of the biggest conversations in agriculture, and for good reason.

From pH and nutrient availability to lime, calcium, earthworms and long-term grassland performance, our Soil Health Hub is built to help farmers stay informed, make better decisions and get more from their land.

Practical advice. Relevant insights. Soil-first thinking.

Soil pH and earthworms are more connected than many farmers realise. 🤝

Earthworms thrive in soils with a near-neutral pH, where nutrients are more available and microbial activity can do its job properly. But when soils become too acidic, earthworm activity can decline🪱

That matters because acidic soils can reduce earthworm density and diversity, while also making it harder for soil biology to function at its best. In some cases, calcium deficiency and aluminium toxicity can interfere with earthworm metabolism and reproduction.

For farmers across the UK and Ireland, this is especially important. High rainfall and regular nitrogen fertiliser use can both contribute to soil acidification. The result? Soils can fall below the optimum pH range, limiting earthworm activity and reducing nutrient availability.

The good news is that soil pH is something you can manage 👍

Liming isn’t just about correcting pH. It’s about creating better conditions for life in your soil.🌱

When lime raises soil pH into the optimum range, it can improve nutrient availability, reduce the risk of toxic elements and help applied fertilisers work more efficiently. That’s a win for your soil but it’s also a win for earthworms. 🪱

Acidity is one of the biggest obstacles to a thriving earthworm population. By correcting soil pH, liming helps create a more favourable environment for earthworm activity, which in turn supports better soil structure, drainage, aeration and nutrient cycling. 💚

Our latest blog highlights that earthworm populations are markedly higher in limed soils compared to unlimed soils, particularly where pH has been corrected. So when you invest in lime, you’re not just feeding the crop, you’re supporting the soil system that helps the crop perform.

Earthworms might be small, but their impact below ground is huge 🪱

Think of them as your underground workforce. Every tunnel they create helps open up the soil, improve drainage, reduce compaction and make it easier for roots to reach the water and nutrients they need.

They’re constantly improving soil structure and helping nutrients move through the soil in a way your grass and crops can actually use but like any workforce, they need the right conditions to thrive.

Soil pH, calcium levels and overall soil management all play a major role in how active and healthy your earthworm populations are. Healthy soil starts beneath the surface.

We were delighted to welcome the Mayor Jackson Minford and Mayoress Allison Minford of Mid and East Antrim Borough Council to our stand today at Balmoral Show 💚

It was a pleasure to have them stop by our K Lime stand as they spend the day visiting and supporting local businesses, meeting exhibitors and celebrating the people, products and industries that make our agricultural community so strong.

Balmoral Show is always a fantastic opportunity to connect with farmers, customers and partners from across Northern Ireland, and we’re proud to be here representing K Lime and sharing how our products continue to support soil health, grassland performance and sustainable farming practices.

A big thank you to the Mayor and Mayoress for taking the time to visit us today.

If you’re at Balmoral Show, make sure to call by the K Lime stand and say hello! 👋
