The next chapter of the Chesterfield Canal restoration is almost here! 💧

Last week, we welcomed around 180 visitors to site, including members of the public, representatives from the press and the @ Chesterfield Canal Trust, to see the progress being made ahead of the canal's next major milestone: filling it with water.

The 384m section has now been substantially completed, and this week we've begun pumping in thousands of gallons of water as the canal starts its journey back to life.

Work continues across the site, including the installation of coping stones that will form the visible canal edge for future boaters. The scheme also makes use of an existing railway structure and will ultimately provide new mooring opportunities along the restored canal.

It was a fantastic opportunity to showcase the progress achieved so far and hear from George Rogers and Tony Mitchell about the importance of this landmark project.

Results day comes around quick, but we're here to remind you that university isn't your only option! 🧑‍🎓

Apprenticeships and vocational work placements are continuing to be one of the most effective, hands-on ways of learning for young people, and provide a unique opportunity to earn whilst you learn in your chosen field - particularly for those looking for a career in the construction sector.

After over twenty years supporting young people with routes into construction, we know a thing or two about apprenticeships. At only 18 years old, latest success story, Hunter, is about to complete his two year apprenticeship before coming on with us full time.

Work complete at Rugby Borough Council ✅

We've completed the reconfiguration of the council's Work Services Unit, helping the facility prepare for expanded food waste collection services. Delivered over 18 weeks, the project included new reinforced concrete roads and HGV parking areas, significant drainage improvements, and the relocation and upgrade of fuel storage infrastructure.

These improvements highlight that better waste management starts with the right infrastructure with these improvements supporting more efficient collection operations while contributing to wider environmental goals.

The O'Brien Charitable Trust is at the heart of our business and as part of this ongoing commitment, we recently donated £4,000 to our long-term friends at Freddie's Wish.

The charity provides bereavement support to parents who have lost a child, and this contribution will help their team to provide free paediatric first aid awareness sessions in conjunction with MDD first aid - an opportunity which has already trained over 650 people previously.

This World Nature Conservation Day, we're celebrating the idea that construction and conservation can work together, as showcased through our work at the National Trust's Shugborough Estate.

The new visitor centre has been carefully designed around a magnificent 500-year-old oak tree. By adopting a nature-first approach, we're helping to preserve the site's woodlands and gardens for future generations of visitors, ensuring this special place continues to thrive. 🌳

By working closely with the National Trust, we're helping to create a space that will welcome visitors for years to come while supporting the estate's ongoing conservation work.

Working on a 22,500m² facility is no easy task, but our team onsite at Magna Park 's new HGV electric charging facility have been keeping up the pace since we began works for Keoma Energy in January.

Six months in, the south yard is nearly complete with 60% of all concrete slabs laid, while 15,000m of ducting and drainge has been installed in the north yard. 🚧

We caught up with Construction Director, Lance Gudger, to discuss the site's progress on a particularly sunny day... ☀️

We had a brilliant day at Magna Park’s National Logistics Day event for young students in Lutterworth last week, highlighting the different careers linked to logistics, construction and civil engineering.

The children had the opportunity to chat to our Director, Lance Gudger, about his journey into his construction career and role at O’Brien Contractors, all while getting to try on our site kit and take a tour around one of our excavators.👷

We hope the event left the pupils feeling inspired about what they might want to do when they’re older!
