LOFT SURVEY REVEALS HISTORIC RAT ACTIVITY – PONTEFRACT, WAKEFIELD

Last job in the Pontefract area was a site survey carried out following reports of noises being heard within the loft space.

Upon inspection, hundreds, if not thousands, of rat droppings were discovered throughout the loft. Based on our findings and experience, we believe this infestation is largely historic. No food sources within the property appear to be currently affected, which suggests the activity may have been at its worst during the winter months.

Heavily gnawed electrical cables were also noted throughout the loft space, highlighting the extent of the previous rodent activity. Unfortunately, the damage was so severe that our clients are now having the entire upper floor of the property rewired for safety reasons.

A thorough external inspection was conducted; however, no obvious ingress points were identified on the outside of the building. As a result, we have recommended a detailed drainage investigation, as defects within the drainage system can often provide hidden access routes for rodents.

A structured trapping programme has now been implemented, and once any drainage faults are identified, they will be rectified immediately to prevent further rodent activity.

RAT INGRESS SURVEY – PONTEFRACT AREA, WAKEFIELD

Another part of the afternoon was spent in the Pontefract area of Wakefield carrying out an in-depth site survey following reports of noises being heard within the loft space.

A thorough internal and external inspection was undertaken, which led us to uncover a significant ingress point where a soil waste pipe entered the property. The gap beneath the concrete lintel surrounding the soil waste pipe pe*******on had not been adequately sealed, providing rats with direct access into the property.

Unfortunately, the property is situated in an area with high levels of rodent activity due to its proximity to railway lines, open fields and surrounding habitats, making it essential that this defect was addressed promptly.

The ingress point has now been professionally proofed, preventing further access, and a structured riddance programme has been implemented to trap and remove any rats that may already be present within the property.

BUMBLEBEE NEST RELOCATED – PONTEFRACT, WAKEFIELD

When our client was having their loft boarded out yesterday, the contractors carrying out the work unfortunately disturbed an active British bumblebee nest within the loft space.

As this was the exact area that needed to be accessed for the works to continue, we received an urgent call-out to a property in the Pontefract area of Wakefield. Upon arrival, the nest was fully removed along with a large number of worker bees. This process is far more time-consuming, as it is important to allow as many returning foraging workers as possible to re-enter the nest before relocation. The majority of the colony, including the queen, brood and worker bees, was successfully removed and relocated to a more suitable location.

We fully appreciate that bumblebees in a loft space are often no direct threat to homeowners. However, with the loft works needing to proceed and the nest having already been disturbed, intervention was necessary to protect both the bees and those carrying out the work.

The successful relocation allowed the contractors to continue their work with minimal disruption while giving the colony the best possible chance of survival.

ONGOING RAT TREATMENT – CASTLEFORD, WAKEFIELD

A second visit was carried out to an ongoing rat issue at a domestic property in the Castleford area of Wakefield.

As you can see, one juvenile rat was trapped behind the kitchen kickboards. This was the only rat reported and identified within the property. Following our investigation, the likely point of entry was traced to a drainage fault located approximately one foot from the kitchen wall.

The rat has now been removed and all traps have been reset for continued monitoring. Based on the evidence found so far, we are confident that the treatment is nearing a successful conclusion, although we will continue to monitor the situation closely to ensure no further activity remains.

RAT FORENSICS THE CLUES YOU DON’T ALWAYS NOTICE - WAKEFIELD

It might sound a bit daft, but dust on furniture and household items can often give us a strong indication of what type of rodent is active within a property.

As you can see from the attached image, there is a clear juvenile rat footprint visible on the bottom of a breakfast bar stool. These subtle signs are often missed by homeowners but can provide valuable evidence during an inspection.

Although it isn’t visible in the photograph, there was also a fruit bowl containing apples and pears on the breakfast bar. Based on the location of the footprint and surrounding evidence, we believe the juvenile rat had attempted to access the fruit.

This image was taken during a survey at a domestic property in the Altofts area of Wakefield, where our inspection helped confirm active rat activity within the home.

EMERGENCY EUROPEAN TREE BEE RELOCATION – LEEDS

An emergency call-out this afternoon to the Osmondthorpe area of Leeds following reports of an active European tree bee nest being disturbed during demolition works.

Upon arrival, we found that part of a disused wooden office/container had already been dismantled, causing a section of the nest to fall onto the ground and understandably making the bees quite agitated.

European tree bees are an important pollinator species and are commonly found nesting in cavities such as bird boxes, roof spaces and wooden structures.

Our technician carefully stripped back the remaining section, recovered the nest, and allowed as many returning worker bees as possible to crawl back into it before safely relocating the colony to a more suitable location.

Another successful European tree bee relocation carried out with the welfare of the colony as the main priority.

BUMBLEBEE NEST SAFELY REMOVED & RELOCATED

Whilst attending a property in the Pontefract area of Wakefield where our client was having a full rewire carried out, the electrician noticed a large amount of bumblebee activity within the loft space.

Upon inspection, an active bumblebee nest was discovered. With the property's roof due to be completely replaced within the next two days, it was vital that the nest was safely removed and relocated to prevent any harm coming to the bees.

Our team successfully removed and relocated the entire nest in under 20 minutes from arriving on site, ensuring both the bees and the upcoming roofing works could continue safely.

Another successful bumblebee relocation completed by VermiCure Pest Control. It's worth noting that most beekeepers don't typically handle bumblebee relocations, making this a specialist service that requires the right knowledge and care.

WASP ACTIVITY ON THE RISE

Due to the recent heatwave and the warm weather we’ve experienced over the past couple of weeks, wasp activity has increased significantly. The higher temperatures make wasps far more active, meaning you’ll notice them more frequently around gardens, bushes, hedges, properties and workplaces.

As colonies continue to grow throughout the summer, wasps can also become more defensive and aggressive, particularly if their nest is disturbed. If you’re seeing large numbers of wasps flying in and out of bushes, rooflines, wall cavities or around your property, there is a good chance a nest is nearby.

If you have concerns about wasp activity at your home or place of work, don’t hesitate to contact VermiCure Pest Control.

(Please note this is a new bee suit for this season they don’t stay this clean for long)

HIDDEN WASP NEST FOUND DURING HEDGE TRIMMING - RAWCLIFFE , GOOLE

This morning we attended a domestic property in the Rawcliffe area where our client had been trimming back a hedge and unfortunately uncovered an active wasp nest. During the incident, our client sustained multiple wasp stings before being able to move away from the area safely.

Upon arrival, we carried out a full assessment of the nest and implemented a professional wasp treatment. The nest was then fully removed to eliminate any further risk to the occupants and anyone using the garden.

With the nest now eradicated, our client can safely resume cutting back and maintaining the hedge line. This serves as a reminder to always take extra care when trimming dense hedges, shrubs and vegetation during the wasp season, as nests can often remain hidden until disturbed.

Rodent Investigation & Drainage Assessment- Adel, Leeds

A site inspection was carried out at a property in Adel, Leeds following reports of rat activity in the rear garden.

The client had previously employed another pest control company who implemented a baiting programme. However, our inspection found that the source of the infestation had not been identified.

During the investigation, active rat activity was traced to a manhole chamber in the rear garden. Further inspection revealed a redundant drainage pipe providing rats with access and harbourage. Evidence of tunnelling from the manhole into the surrounding garden confirmed the drainage defect as the point of emergence.

A riddance programme has now been implemented, including monitoring, trapping and targeted control measures to reduce and eliminate the infestation.

Recommendations have been provided regarding the drainage defects identified. Corrective drainage works will be required to prevent future infestations and support long-term control.

Without rectifying the drainage defects, there remains a risk of continued rat ingress and recurring infestations.
