🚗 TikTok said it would work. The car disagreed.

This customer had locked their keys inside the car and tried a popular TikTok trick using strong tape to pull the window down.

The result? Plenty of tape, a very stubborn window, and the keys still safely locked inside. 😅

Modern car windows are not designed to be dragged down from the outside, and attempts like this can damage the glass, window mechanism, seals or paintwork, turning a simple lockout into a much more expensive repair.

🔐 “It’s just a normal lock…”

That sentence gives locksmiths a tiny internal twitch. 😅

There are more than 80 types of multipoint locks (yes, the thing that sits inside the door, not the one where the key gets in), made by different manufacturers, in different sizes, with hooks, bolts, rollers and latches positioned in completely different places.

From the outside, they can all look like… well, a normal lock.

Inside the door, however, it can be a completely different mechanical spaghetti looking like.

That’s why giving an exact price over the phone can be difficult. It’s a bit like calling a garage and saying:

“My car is broken. It’s just a normal car.”

Clear photos can help me narrow it down, but I normally need to identify the mechanism properly before confirming the exact cost.

The good news is that the whole locking strip does not always need replacing. Sometimes only the gearbox has failed.

Not something I see every day! 🔐

This unusual locking mechanism looks like it belongs on a submarine, but it is fitted to a heavy duty metal fire door.

Nothing was broken. It had simply become stiff and needed proper maintenance. With temperatures climbing above 30°C, metal doors and their locking parts can expand slightly, making existing friction or alignment issues much more noticeable.

The mechanism was cleaned, adjusted, lubricated and thoroughly tested. It is now operating smoothly again, with no replacement parts needed.

A useful reminder that not every lock problem requires a new lock. A little maintenance at the right time can prevent a complete failure later.

Patio door job today in Adel.

A few weeks ago, I was called out because the door wasn’t closing or locking properly. I adjusted it, and it worked much better, but I also spotted the gearbox was very loose and likely on its way out.

I advised replacing it at the time, but the customer wanted to try the adjustment first, which is fair enough.

Three weeks later, the mechanism failed completely and the door wouldn’t open. I attended, opened the door, removed the failed gearbox and fitted a new one.

The door is now working as it should.

Sometimes an adjustment helps for a while, but when the mechanism is already failing, it’s only delaying the inevitable.

My advice is always honest: I’d rather tell you what’s actually going on than just make the door work “for now” and pretend the problem has gone.

Today I unlocked a Ford using a specialist Lishi tool.

The job took around 5 minutes, but before I started I told the customer the price was £75.

He said, “£75 to unlock it? I’ve seen those tools on Amazon. I could’ve done it myself.”

So I politely said, “Tell you what, use my tool so you don’t need to buy one. If you can open it, I’ll pay you £75.”

Fair play to him, he accepted the challenge.

After about 20 minutes (he spent the first 10 minutes watching youtube tutorials, handed the tool back and said, “It’s not just the tool, is it? I have no clue what Im doing. You need skill and practice.”

Exactly.

A locksmith’s price is not just for the tool. It’s for the training, experience, knowing what to do, doing it without damage, and getting you back on the road quickly.

In the end, he agreed £75 was more than fair.
