Over the past decade, we have developed extensive experience in healthcare design. Vida Grange was the first specialist dementia care home we designed for Vida Healthcare, a Harrogate-based provider dedicated to delivering exceptional dementia care.

Completed in 2016, the 124-bed home was developed with a design-led approach from the outset, with the client’s brief centred around creating a state-of-the-art building that could be seen as an exemplar in the field of dementia care.

Externally, the stepped form of the building helps break down the overall scale while creating generous roof terraces for residents, offering safe access to outdoor space, fresh air and views.

The building combines a strong architectural presence with a carefully considered care environment, balancing the practical requirements of a specialist dementia care home with spaces that feel open, connected and supportive.

For Den Architecture, Vida Grange remains a strong example of how architecture can support wellbeing through form, layout and access to outdoor space.

Work is currently on site for the next phase of Lavender Fields Care Village, with 19 additional assisted living bungalows now being delivered.

Following the completion of the first phase, which included Provence House a 72-bed care home, administrative centre and 24 assisted living bungalows, Phase 2 continues the vision for a connected later life community near York.

For us, this next phase builds on the original principles of the development: considered homes, with layouts designed with care at the forefront. Landscaped surroundings and a clear relationship between independence, support and community.

It is always rewarding to see a project continue to grow from concept through to completion, and now into its next stage on site.

Alongside the 72-bed care home at Lavender Fields, the wider care village includes 24 assisted living bungalows, designed to offer residents greater independence while remaining part of a supportive care environment.

The bungalows allow residents to enjoy their own private home, with space for everyday living, visitors and a stronger sense of personal routine.

Set within the landscaped grounds of the care village, they help create a more varied and flexible model of later life living, where residents can remain connected to the wider community while still having their own front door.

This balance between independence, support and setting is what makes care village design so valuable.

Lavender Fields Care Village near York was built in 2024, and designed to create a calm, supportive and welcoming environment for later life care.

At the heart of the development is Provence House, a 72-bedroom care home set within landscaped grounds and surrounded by views across the Yorkshire countryside.

The building has been designed to feel connected to its setting, with generous communal spaces full of natural light, considered internal layouts and access to outdoor areas that support both residents and staff.

The central hub and interiors throughout are designed by Catalyst Interiors, and include a pub, cafe, coffee shop, village shop, hairdressers and gym.

For care environments, the architecture needs to do more than simply work on plan. It needs to feel safe, familiar and comfortable, while supporting the practical demands of day-to-day care.

Lavender Fields is a great example of how thoughtful design can help create a more considered setting for residents, families, visitors and care teams.
