What actually goes on before the first pencil sketch?

Good architecture is about far more than putting pen to paper.

Before any design can even start, a thorough understanding of the project brief is essential – considering a clients aspirations, the functional requirements of the scheme, the opportunities and constraints of the site, planning and technical considerations, and budget, to name but a few.

Asking the right questions at the right time, and obtaining a full understanding of exactly what it is that the client wants/needs is key to laying the foundations of a successful project.

What are the clients aspirations?
Who will be using the building and how?
What can the site offer?
What constraints might there be?
How can these be overcome?

How realistic are the clients ambitions, both functionally and financially?

Taking the time to truly understand the brief can only aid the design process.

Because before architecture can be about artistry and self expression, it must first be about addressing and solving real world problems.

Another positive morning at North York Crematorium, with Nicky attending the site progress meeting—and the sunshine joining her!

The project is coming along nicely, with the structure now in place and another important milestone reached. It’s great to see everything progressing well on site, and we’re looking forward to the next phase of the work.

If you know Laura Keenan, you will know that she loves travelling.

After spending 3 weeks exploring Canada, she's returned with plenty of memories—and a camera roll full of buildings, streetscapes and places that caught her eye along the way.

Working in an architectural practice has a funny way of changing how you see the world. Whether it's an impressive skyline, an interesting public space or a beautifully detailed building, inspiration can often be found in the places you least expect.

Here's a look at some of the architectural highlights from Laura's trip and the places that inspired her along the way.

Our office is based in Greenhouse, an environmentally conscious building in Leeds, around a 20-minute walk from the train station. It has good bus, cycle and walking links to the city centre, free on-street parking nearby and easy access to the M621 and M62.

Since moving in, the way we work has changed. Our drawing boards have been replaced by CAD software, our archive has been digitised and we have moved towards a paperless office. Combined with hybrid working, this has created more space than we now need.

We are therefore looking to sublet part of our office to a start-up, small business or established team looking for a friendly, professional and well-connected place to work. The space is ready to move into with minimal setup.

The annual autumn reboot is just around the corner, which means one of our favourite events of the year isn't far away.

Every year we look forward to our Dales & Ales event – a chance to step away from the office and spend time with industry partners we work alongside throughout the year.

It is always a great opportunity to catch up, enjoy the Yorkshire countryside, and have conversations that are often difficult to fit into a busy working week.

We are looking forward to seeing everyone.

The school summer holidays are here – a season of adventure, creativity and discovery!

Whether it's exploring castles, museums, city skylines or simply noticing the buildings around you on holiday, every journey is a chance to see architecture through fresh eyes.

Great design tells stories, shapes communities, and inspires the next generation of thinkers and creators.

Wherever this summer takes you, look up, look closer, and discover the spaces that make each place unique.

Wishing everyone a safe, relaxing and inspiring summer break

Pleased to wrap up another fantastic work experience placement at .

Last week, we welcomed our second work experience student of the year, giving them the opportunity to experience life in practice and gain an insight into the world of architecture.

This week, we were delighted to receive a thank you letter from their school, recognising the time, support, and encouragement our team provided throughout the placement.

It's a reminder that even a single week can make a real difference, helping young people build confidence, discover potential career paths, and develop a better understanding of the built environment.

We are proud to play a small part in inspiring the next generation of architects and designers, and we look forward to welcoming more students in the future.

Last week we were delighted to welcome our first work experience student of the summer to QAD Architects.

Throughout the week they took on our Design Your Dream Home project, exploring everything from initial ideas and mood boards through to floor plans, SketchUp models and presentation drawings. It was fantastic to see their confidence grow as their design developed, and to hear the creative ideas they brought to the project.

Work experience is a great opportunity to gain an insight into life in an architectural practice, and we always enjoy sharing what we do while encouraging the next generation of architects and designers.

We hope you enjoyed your time with us, and we wish you all the best for the future.

A great evening at the RTPI Yorkshire Awards celebrating some fantastic projects from across the region.

We were proud to see our Back Lane project with and shortlisted for another award. It was also great to have Amy Robinson from Karbon Homes join us for the evening. It's always rewarding to see the hard work, collaboration and commitment that goes into delivering quality places recognised by the industry.

A huge thank you to everyone involved in the project and to the Yorkshire team for hosting another excellent event.

If you spotted us on the night and would like to continue the conversation, feel free to connect with the team or visit our website: www.q-ad.co.uk

And of course, congratulations to all the finalists and winners.

It is always great to revisit our completed projects and see them being enjoyed by the communities they're designed for.

Worksop Road in Clowne is a development we completed with Jones Homes. It's fantastic to see the scheme looking as good as ever.

We hope everyone living there is enjoying their homes and that the development continues to be a great place to live.
