Hot Weather advice for UPVC doors. Did you know we also repair locks & doors?

Here's some advice regarding doors during the hot weather, but if you need more advice or a free security assessment, give us a call 07939 992244.

How can you prevent your uPVC windows or doors from expanding in the heat?

In extreme heat, you may have noticed your windows or doors becoming stiff or not opening or closing properly. This could be because the uPVC has swollen. At 40ºC your uPVC can expand by up to 2.4cm, which is quite a lot.

Do not worry though, your windows and doors are not going to break, this is a perfectly natural occurrence. It may actually sort itself out – as when the Sun sets, your windows and doors will retract, returning to normal.

In extreme circumstances you can cool down your uPVC by patting it down with a cold, damp cloth or alternatively spraying the outside with water. This should help the uPVC shrink back to size and work freely once more.

What is lock snapping?

Lock snapping involves snapping the lock cylinder in two, by applying force, and removing the outside part to expose the lock mechanism.

Thieves use tools to snap the locks and, worryingly, it can take just seconds to gain access. This technique does not require experience or skill, merely brute force.

The doors most at risk of this type of attack are fitted with a euro profile cylinder. Euro profile locks are found in the majority of PVCu and composite doors.

To combat this threat simply upgrade your cylinder to one that is specifically designed to prevent this method of attack, one that meets both the TS007 3 Star & Sold Secure Diamond level standards.
