Charnwood Roots

Charnwood Roots The Charnwood Roots project will explore the rich history of Charnwood Forest and the towns and villages that surround it.

Charnwood Roots is a partnership between professional historians, archaeologists, geologists and volunteers from the local community. Together we will:

• Discover how people have lived, worked and enjoyed this unique part of Leicestershire across the centuries.

• Explore the interaction between people and the landscape of Charnwood Forest, uncovering and explaining how the area’s resources have

been exploited throughout history.

• Learn how Charnwood’s geology and natural resources have shaped our towns and villages and the lives of local communities.

• Uncover hidden stories form the darker side of Charnwood’s past and celebrate the many contributions Charnwood has made to the nation. The project is funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund.

Did you know that Charnwood had its own William Shakespeare long before the famous Stratford playwright? On September 29th 1460, William Shakespeare of Loughborough was in court for selling ale in illegal measures and fined 6d (c.£16). Stranger still, the man sitting alongside him in the dock had the surname Burbage!

Interesting day researching our databank for Charnwood's experience of the 1321 Despenser War. Loughborough, Quorn, Beaumanor and Hugglescote are raided, doors and windows smashed open, goods and livestock taken away, and property destroyed as the Earl of Lancaster's coterie turn bitter rivalry into bloody vengeance...

Whilst researching the databank we came across a Shepshed court roll dated 1478, in which a wonderfully ambiguous scribe entered into the record that three men went up before jurors for 'baking human bread'. Hopefully he meant bread *for* humans...

22 volunteers joined us for a spot of fieldwalking in Thurcaston today. We lost our ranging poles a few times in the fog but fortunately the finds were easier to spot! We found some early and late medieval pottery, different types of Roman pottery and some worked flint.

We spent a great day on Friday visiting the People's History Museum in Manchester. It's an excellent exhibition, which gave us some really good ideas on interactive displays for the May 21st Charnwood Roots Heritage Festival at Beaumanor.
