"Will crown reducing my old oak kill it?" Nope. Not if it's done right. Reducing and thinning a mature tree means cutting back to proper growth points and letting a bit more light through the canopy. Not topping it. Round the Victorian streets of Stoneygate and Knighton we do loads of lime, oak, beech that've sat untouched for decades. A sensible reduction takes weight off the tree before the autumn gales roll in. Mind you. Conservation area? We'll sort the TPO paperwork first. Leave it and you'll get suckers. Slow rot. On the clay round Knighton and Stoneygate, it'll trap moisture too, which plays havoc near foundations.

We grind down to about 200-300mm below grade. Backfill with the arisings or clean topsoil. Rake off.

Access matters. Narrow side gates? We bring the smaller machine.

Badly diseased (ash dieback is everywhere round Leicester roadsides now). Or causing real subsidence on our clay soils. How we do it matters just as much. Tight gardens get sectional dismantling. Can I get my hedge cut back in July? Only if it's checked for active nests first. Disturbing them is an offence. We're still well inside nesting season till the end of August, so anything past a light tidy usually needs to wait.

Summer's a decent window for spotting stress in mature limes and beeches round Stoneygate and Knighton. Especially after a dry spell on this clay.
