Gary Shorrock is taking on one of Britain’s most demanding endurance challenges in aid of ME Research UK: the Bob Graham Round in the Lake District.

His fundraiser is co-organised by his brother, Steven, who was diagnosed with ME/CFS in 2025.

To complete it, Gary must cover around 66 miles, summit 42 fells, and climb more than 8,200 metres — approximately 26,900 feet of ascent — all within 24 hours, on 27-28 June 2026.

That means steep, rocky, boggy terrain, long hours on the move, and likely sections in darkness and harsh weather. The Bob Graham Round is an exceptional test of endurance, preparation, judgement, and determination.

Only around 3000 people have ever achieved it.

Gary and Steven say that “this challenge will honour those living with the reality of ME/CFS, not for a single day, but day after day.”

Thank you both, Gary and Steven. We wish you the very best.

Running a scrap yard isn’t as simple as many people think.

Every day brings new challenges – rising costs, regulations, fuel prices, equipment maintenance, insurance, wages, utilities, and countless other expenses that continue to increase year after year. The reality is that running a yard has never been more difficult or more expensive.
There have been times when I’ve genuinely thought about shutting the doors and walking away. The pressure can be overwhelming, and the sacrifices behind the scenes often go unseen.

Along the way, we’ve made mistakes, but we try to improve every day and learn new things. That’s all anyone can do. We think about our staff who work hard every day and rely on us. We think about our loyal customers who have supported us through the good times and the difficult times. Over the last 13 years, we’ve sadly lost people along the way. Chris and Adam, when a customers passes. We know when people are having a good day, and bad. When people are clearing out homes full of memories still recovering from grief. We’ve also had members of staff leave over the years to navigate life. Many of them started this journey with us and were a big part of what Scrap Trade Centre has become today. It's a hard dirty tough job, the job isn't for everybody but what an amazing team we have.
That’s what keeps us going.

I’ll be honest, I actually love my job (I can’t speak for everyone), but what I love most is the little family we’ve built. Every single customer is part of that family to me, and we’re incredibly grateful for every person who chooses to support us.
Your business means more than you know, and it’s because of your continued support that we’re able to keep moving forward despite the challenges. We don't have fancy offices, brand new vehicles, 5 holidays a year or luxury villas. We are happy just the way we are, comfortable in our little homes with our family.

Thank you to our staff, past and present, our customers, and our family for standing by us. We don’t take it for granted.

Here’s to keeping the gates open, working hard, learning every day, and facing whatever comes next together.

Much love,
The Scrap Trade Team xx
