🌿 W**D OF THE DAY — DAY 15 🌿
💙 Common Field Speedwell (Veronica persica)
One of those tiny w**ds you can easily overlook! Common Field Speedwell is a low-growing plant with small bright blue flowers, often with darker blue veins.
🌱 Where you'll find it:
Lawns, borders, flower beds, paths and disturbed ground. It can spread quickly, especially where soil is regularly disturbed.
🐝 Good for wildlife:
Its little flowers provide nectar and pollen for early insects, making it a small but useful part of the garden ecosystem.
🍃 Is it edible?
Speedwell species have historically been used as food and herbal teas, but Common Field Speedwell isn't generally considered a worthwhile edible plant. Identification needs to be 100% certain before consuming any wild plant.
🌿 Medicinal uses:
Veronica species have a long history of traditional herbal use, including teas traditionally used for coughs and digestive complaints. However, evidence for medicinal benefits of Common Field Speedwell specifically is limited, so it's best not to treat it as medicine.
👀 Fun fact:
The name Speedwell is thought to be connected with an old belief that the plant could help you recover quickly — hence "speed well"! 💙
Would you leave this little blue flower in your garden or pull it out? 😆
