The Refined Landscapes team

Designers, landscapers, project managers, operations, accounts and everything in between

Every garden we create takes a huge amount of work behind the scenes, from the first concept drawings through to the final planting and finishing details

A lot of different people, skills and care go into each project, and we’re very lucky to have this team behind us

More from the Refined team

Following on from our recent team get-together, here’s part two of the questions we put to some of the people behind the gardens

This time, a few more thoughts on what makes Refined feel like Refined, the projects people have enjoyed most, and the very important question of who brings the best packed lunch

It is a good reminder that gardens are built by lots of different hands and perspectives. From design and planning through to planting, detailing and the final finish, every person brings something different to the process

Another small look behind the scenes, and at the team that helps bring our gardens to life

On the Drawing Board this week: our Floating Terrace Garden.

In this series, we look back through our archives at some of the gardens we’ve designed and built, revisiting the journey from concept through to completion.

This project was centred around a simple idea: creating a modern garden shaped by floating planes of pale stone and softened by naturalistic planting.

Large format terraces appear to hover above the lawn, helping to define clear outdoor spaces for dining and lounging, while steel edged planting islands introduce movement, texture and seasonality through grasses and perennials.

The balance between crisp architectural lines and softer planting gives the garden a calm, open feel, while still making it incredibly usable day to day.

A few familiar faces from the Refined team

At a recent team get-together, we asked everyone a few questions about their work, from their favourite projects to what they enjoy most about landscaping

It is always interesting hearing what people are drawn to, whether that is the planting, the craftsmanship, the problem-solving, or simply seeing a garden come together after months of work

So much of what we do is shaped by the people behind it. The designers, landscapers, project managers and wider team who bring each garden to life

A small look behind the scenes, and a chance to get to know a few of the people who make Refined what it is

An early morning walk with some of the team

As a company, one of the principles we try to carry through everything we do is getting people outside and into nature

Sometimes that is through the gardens and landscapes we create for our clients. Other times, it is as simple as stepping away from site and studio for a morning walk together

In such a busy, modern world, it can be surprisingly hard to stay connected. To each other, to our surroundings, and to the natural landscapes that inspire so much of what we do

Whether it is a carefully designed garden or a quiet walk through a local nature reserve, being outside has a way of slowing things down and bringing people together

A lovely morning with some of the landscaping and design team, and a good reminder of why we do what we do

On the Drawing Board this week: a new-build garden in Hertford.

In this series, we look back through our archives at some of the gardens we’ve designed and built, revisiting the journey from concept through to completion.

For this project, the client asked us to take a flat, blank new-build plot and create a garden with more interest, while still keeping the space practical and usable.

The design retains an area of lawn, along with the more functional elements such as screening and garden storage, but introduces much more movement and character through the layout.

Corten steel-framed stepping stones, infilled with pavers, float through a generous planting bed towards a raised deck and pergola, adding a sense of height and structure to the garden.

It is this kind of topography and journey that is so often missing from new-build plots, and what helps the space feel far more considered.

A residential garden inspired by the language of public spaces

A project the studio has been working on earlier this year, these renders explore flowing self-binding gravel pathways moving through an abundant, naturalistic planting scheme

The layout has a softness and sense of openness to it, while still creating clear routes and places to pause within the garden

FURNS furniture range features throughout the scheme, giving a subtle nod to the public spaces that helped inspire the design. Designed with public spaces in mind, the furniture has a solidity and resilience that felt really appropriate here

Designed to sit within a much larger, more formal garden, this space offers a quieter moment within the wider landscape. A place for pause, reflection and contemplation

A contemporary kitchen garden, with a few traditional roots.

There is something incredibly rewarding about eating food you have grown yourself, even on a small scale.

For this garden, we wanted to create a productive space that still felt refined and connected to the rest of the design. Corten steel planters bring a more contemporary feel, while the planting, hedging and open countryside beyond give the garden a softer, more traditional character.

Kitchen gardens are something we are always pleased to see clients asking for. They bring a garden to life in a very different way, encouraging a closer connection with the seasons, the weather and the simple pleasure of growing something useful.

On the Drawing Board this week: a small city garden we still love looking back on.

In this series, we look back through our archives at some of the gardens we’ve designed and built, revisiting the journey from concept through to completion.

This project shows how a small space can become such a considered and inviting retreat, using the natural level changes within the garden to create interest, movement and a sense of journey.

Details like the feature boulders, carefully scribed paving and statement Corten steel edged limestone staircase all helped give the garden a strong sense of character.
