Now, we all know that Sir John Harrington is credited with designing the first flushing toilet system, but what did people do before then to dispose of their… errr… bodily waste?!

Well, the most basic form of early toilet was a hole, or cesspit, in the ground, emptied periodically by "night soil men" in cities; the Romans used public latrines with seats over channels of flowing water, using communal sponges on sticks for cleaning; Medieval castles featured chambers (garderobes) built into walls where waste dropped into a moat or pit below; and Georgian’s used chamber pots, with the contents often thrown out windows (shouting "Gardez l'eau!") in the morning! YUCK!

Here’s another fascinating historical heating fact for you! The modern radiator was invented between 1855 and 1857 by Russian engineer Franz San Galli, who called it a "Hot Box".

Initially expensive, these cast iron units circulated hot water or steam to heat rooms.

San Galli's design featured large steel columns with waterways for hot water to pass through, revolutionising central heating for homes. While the design was rudimentary, his "hot box" is considered a key development in the history of modern radiators.
