It’s amazing that the original roof structure and rafters are still in place under the modern roof, tudor soot and all. However, once the cobwebs and the years of dirt are brushed away from the rafters there’s often not much left except dust thanks to those pesky beetles. Brendan and Callum have done a great job of saving as much as possible, and replacing with old timbers where they can and new seasoned oak when they can’t.

I was tagged in this picture in a Facebook post this week to say we’d missed a visitor! It’s over 8 years since we met Brendan who was contracting for the company who started our restoration project. The builders didn’t last long, but Brendan called and said he wanted to finish the job he’d started. For over a year he was a constant in our lives, arriving by 7.30 every day. He told us he would get our house built, and he did. It helps he drinks in a pub full of very useful tradespeople! Brendan loves his routine, and would stop like clockwork for breakfast and lunch. Before long his amazing partner, now wife, Elaine, was packing extra for two small children who would take their place on each knee! Brendan is an incredibly skilled timber frame carpenter and we will forever be indebted to him for sticking with us. (He also is indebted to us for the constant stream of work he’s had since appearing in our episode of BBC2s Restoration Home. Our table at his wedding was full of clients who had asked us for his details, two of which are now great friends 🤣). Brendan and Elaine are now a firm part of the family and we don’t see them enough!
