I had the privilege of visiting International Bomber Command Centre with my family today. This marked my first visit, despite the venue's close proximity. During my exploration of the exhibition, I was struck by the profound importance of recognizing the sacrifices made by young men and women who gave their lives to safeguard the future generations of our nation. It is concerning that this appears to have been overlooked by our current leadership. We must ensure that our history, encompassing both its positive and negative aspects, is presented with transparency, accuracy, and without subjective interpretation.

To the individuals named Garland (to my knowledge, no familial relation) who made the ultimate sacrifice, I extend my sincere gratitude.

Finally, I highly recommend Lincoln, a remarkable historical city, for those who have not yet had the opportunity to visit. A long weekend would provide ample time to appreciate the architectural evolution and rich heritage that humanity have left over centuries.

Something a little different. I need to reproduce a missing section of acanthus carving, and it's in an S-shape form. I don't get that much carving to do, but I do enjoy doing the odd little bit now and then.

During a job interview in the early 1990s, I was required to demonstrate my manual skills by constructing a dovetail joint, a mortise and tenon joint, and two distinct veneered panels. One panel was to be laid using animal glue, and the other with iron glue, primarily due to the intricate design and time constraints. I sourced the necessary tools and completed the assigned tasks. Although a full day was allotted, I finished and presented my work by 1:00 PM.

The owner inquired about why I had presented two sets of dovetails. One set featured a flat bottom (e.g., a modern practice). The second set incorporated an angled floor, a common practice in the 18th century, which is typically filled by glue during the cramping process.
The photos show that practice of an angled floor for two reasons. One was speed, and the other meant the glue didn't blow out of the joint, as seen by the dry glue in the valley.
Now all cleaned and reglued.

As a restorer, we come across things that shouldn't be there, but are. This table has a lap joint to bring two boards together over the conventional butt joint. But they also fitted five metal square nails to act as dowels. This I have not seen before and it was original, judging by how long it took to remove them, so all the years of dust, food, and wax could be removed before regluing.

This morning, I received the latest journal from the The Furniture History Society, along with the subsequent Index volume covering 2010-2019. As I possess every journal and index since the inaugural issue, I believe it is opportune to acquire a new piece of furniture to accommodate them, given that my current storage capacity is at a end with those of The Chipstone Foundation American Furniture journals.
Back to work but very much look forward to reading these articals by Christopher Rowell

The George III yew wood and elm Windsor chair is now all back together. The arm section is fully reconstructed, and the arm support is put back with internal support to spread the strength away from the broken place.
Now for a light revive, some colouring, and this gem is ready for the client to try. I will probably end up sitting in it daily because it is very comfortable.

This morning's car boot sale worked out well today.
First, mahogany curl and thick cut, which was nice, and then two packs, also thick cut, of Brazilian Rosewood.
Which has a fabulous grain pattern for a project at some point.

I have never had a piece of furniture give me the 🖕before, but this gothic yew wood Windsor chair did that the moment the carrier left on Thursday.

Photos 3 and 4 show the little problem this chair has and the fact that someone else has tried to repair it a couple of times and failed. Now it's going to be cleaned of old foam glue (doesn't work and is rubbish on antique furniture) and Cascamite glue, and I will restore this Georgian Windsor back to its full working order.

Time to sit back with a nice cold beer and a gin for on a hot evening before we go to dinner with & after Izzy completed her last exam yesterday, which ended 3 years of university covering Forensic Science. Now we all have to wait for the results. 🤞🙏

A period escutcheon being removed for the first time since it was put on in a country workshop circa 1750s when this chest of drawers was finished.
I love this detailing, which most people miss.
