Pack those plants in! Higher density planting helps plants grow better as well as looking naturally beautifully. I find 9 - 11 plants per square metre tends to be about right but of course it does depend on the context, environment, the type of plants etc. Really interested to know other people's thoughts on this?

I’ve recently taken on the role of Permanent Planting Coordinator for Burgh Beautiful and my first task was adding some new planting to this stunning sculpture. I selected some native, evergreen grasses to complement the existing Eryngiums and Cirsium and added 100 Allium bulbs for Spring colour. Can’t wait to see how it looks in May!

Hi everyone 👋

I’m Laura, the proud founder of Flora & Wild. I thought I should write an introductory post, sharing a bit about my journey into horticulture and my passion for plants!

After working in London for 10 years, I knew I needed to do something new, something that gave me a sense of purpose, but I didn’t know what. After moving to Linlithgow, I got stuck in to sorting out our new garden and was happily digging in the rain one afternoon in November when I realised I’d found my happy place and wasn’t just a fair weather gardener 😂

I went on to study at the Botanics in Edinburgh and completed an HND Horticulture with Plantsmanship. I earned a Distinction and an award for Excellence in Plant ID 🙌☺️
I gained practical experience working as a gardener with the National Trust for Scotland at Falkland Palace before eventually moving on to a horticulturist role at St Andrews Botanic Garden where I continue to work part time.

Now, I’m excited to offer my expertise and passion through private work, bringing my love for planting design and sustainable gardening to your outdoor spaces. My style is naturalistic, focusing on using plants to promote biodiversity and address sustainability and climate change challenges.

Here are a few of my favourite plants that you’ll often find in my designs: Echinacea pallida, Salvia nemorosa, Perovskia atriplicifolia, Francoa appendiculata 🌸

🌿✨ Updating the Canal Bed ✨🌿

A charitable project for Burgh Beautiful Linlithgow.

I'm excited to share the details of this recent project! If you live locally you will hopefully have noticed our transformation of the flower bed opposite the Canal Centre, replacing the annual bedding with beautiful, sustainable perennials. 🌸

I was asked by Burgh Beautiful to design an eco-friendly and low-maintenance bed for this tricky site with its steep slope and very poor soil. It required plants that are drought-resistant and that will protect the soil from erosion.

Inspired by the site being alongside the canal, the bed features blue and silver plants that mirror the water's reflective quality, while deep burgundy flowers evoke the charm of the canal boats, creating a harmonious blend of natural and cultural elements.

From selecting the perfect plants to sourcing and coordinating the planting, it has been such a joy to see the transformation take shape and the many positive comments from passers-by have been really rewarding. I can’t wait to see this bed fill out even more next year!
